Patrick Mahomes Almost Quit Football

Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the NFL’s biggest stars and is already one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the history of the league before he has even reached his 30th birthday, but it sounds like he was ready to quit the sport altogether at one point in his career.

During a question-and-answer session with fans on Instagram on Friday night, Patrick Mahomes’ mother, Randi Mahomes, was asked how she kept her superstar son motivated through “challenging times.”

While Randi acknowledged that she has never had to do much because her son is “so determined for himself,” she did recall one time when he almost quit football back in high school.

“There were times when he would get a little down, even a moment in high school when he wanted to quit football. Yes, he did,” Randi Mahomes said. “And I encouraged him that sitting out a season of sports and watching the games, it was not going to be fun for him. And so, he stuck to it, fortunately.”

Obviously, the rest is history.

Mahomes stuck with football and went on to start for two seasons with the Texas Tech Red Raiders before he was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the NFL Draft. Mahomes then earned the starting spot in his second season with the team, and he has never looked back.

In his seven seasons as the starting quarterback for the Chiefs, Mahomes has led his team to the Super Bowl five times, winning the championship in three of those seasons. Mahomes has made it to the AFC Championship Game in every single season of his career as a starting quarterback.

Needless to say, it’s a good thing that he decided to stick with football back in high school. It certainly paid off for him later in life.
