Marvel Reportedly Rewriting Most of X-Men ’97 Season 2 Following Beau DeMayo Firing

Marvel is reportedly rewriting “most” of X-Men ’97 Season 2 following Beau DeMayo’s firing.

In March 2024, DeMayo was fired as head writer of X-Men ’97 after completing work on the first two seasons of the Disney+ series. Marvel did not give a reason for DeMayo’s firing at the time.

DeMayo then claimed in an X post on Thursday, August 16, 2024, that Marvel was stripping his Season 2 credits after he posted X-Men fan art on Instagram for Gay Pride in June 2024.

In response, Marvel released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter saying, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”

What allegedly happened with X-Men ’97, Marvel, and Beau DeMayo?

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, DeMayo was fired for alleging sending “photos of himself in various states of undress” to several young staff members. These photos allegedly saw DeMayo “wearing superhero costumes and striking sexually suggestive ‘hero’ poses that could be used as ‘inspiration’ for the show.”

Sneider also reports that DeMayo allegedly groped an assistant and was both emotionally and physically abusive to staff members.

Now, according to Sneider, Marvel has removed DeMayo’s executive producer credit for X-Men ’97 Season 2. They legally can’t take away any of his specific writing credits; however, the company is now reportedly rewriting “most” of the new season.

Sneider further notes that Matthew Chauncey, who was hired to write X-Men ’97 Season 3 in July 2024 following DeMayo’s exit, will “most likely” oversee the rewrites for Season 2, which does not have an official release date at this time.

DeMayo has not responded to the allegations detailed in Sneider’s report at this time. Following the release of Marvel’s statement, he wrote on X, “The truth will be revealed. After their Disney Plus disaster, marvel wants to mislead with alleged contract breaches over tweets. It’s tragic it’s come to this but unsurprising. Stay tuned.”
