What Song Is In The Venom: The Last Dance Trailer & What It Means

Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and Venom in Venom The Last Dance trailer

The first official trailer for Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance has been released, featuring an iconic song that could reveal new details about the upcoming sequel. Set outside the MCU, though perhaps with connections to the Marvel Studios franchise after 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way HomeVenom: The Last Dance is scheduled to premiere in October 2024, marking the most recent addition to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Venom: The Last Dance will be the final SSU movie focused on Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock, the host of the Venom Symbiote, and it appears to be a dramatic closing salvo for the Lethal Protector.

After several recent updates concerning the upcoming SSU movie, Venom: The Last Dance’s first official trailer was released on June 3, 2024, uncovering new details about Hardy’s final adventure as Venom. While focusing once again on the buddy cop dynamic between Eddie Brock and Venom, Venom: The Last Dance is set to bring new villains into the SSU in the form of more Symbiote beings from Venom’s homeworld. Hunted by both humans and Symbiotes, Eddie Brock and Venom will embark on an intense mission as wanted fugitives, which Venom: The Last Dance’s trailer puts to the tune of David Bowie.

Venom: The Last Dance’s Trailer Song Explained

The song featured in Venom: The Last Dance’s first official trailer is “Space Oddity” by David Bowie, albeit a distorted, slowed-down iteration of the iconic tune. “Space Oddity” was released in July 1969 as the opening track on Bowie’s second studio album, David Bowie, and was rush-released as a single to capitalize on the Apollo 11 Moon landing, even being used as background music for the BBC’s coverage of the historic event. “Space Oddity” marked a huge divergence for Bowie, focused on the fictional Major Tom, and inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, highlighting Bowie’s feelings of alienation.

“Space Oddity’s” release marked the beginning of a transformation for David Bowie, who entered into a period of experimentation before returning as the flamboyant and androgynous Ziggy Stardust. As well as being inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, “Space Oddity” was deeply inspired by Bowie’s own feelings of loneliness and heartache following his break-up from dancer Hermione Farthingale. The fact that “Space Oddity” is featured in Venom: The Last Dance’s first trailer suggests the intense emotions delivered throughout the otherworldly song will be pivotal to the upcoming movie’s much-anticipated storyline.

Why “Space Oddity” Works So Well For Venom: The Last Dance

Perhaps a little too literally, Venom himself could be described as a “Space Oddity” in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The Venom Symbiote is an alien being from the planet Klyntar who was brought to Earth after being found on a passing comet. Even on Klyntar, however, Venom was something of an oddity, as he was deemed a “loser” by his own kind, though found a way to become something of a hero on Earth. With other Symbiotes traveling from Klyntar to Earth in Venom: The Last Dance, Venom’s oddities may be put on full display, giving extra weight to the song.

The fact that more Symbiotes will be coming to Earth in Venom: The Last Dance suggests that more “Space Oddities” will be seen in the movie. On top of this, David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” tells the story of Major Tom, who finds himself lost in space and losing communication with Earth, forcing him to say his goodbyes before his death. This seems to hammer down on the idea that Venom: The Last Dance will see Eddie Brock and Venom embarking on one last adventure before meeting their own makers, though how this comes to pass is yet to be seen.
