Scarlet Witch’s Return Is Closer Than You Think—Thanks to the MCU’s Shocking Death Reveal!

Contains spoilers for Agatha All Along! Agatha All Along successfully introduced Death as a character into the MCU, and her reveal provides the perfect way for Scarlet Witch to make her way back into the universe. Agatha All Along was a breath of fresh air in the MCU timeline, diving deeper into the magical side of the universe and introducing a number of new witches, including Wiccan (Billy), the son of the Scarlet Witch. Wiccan plays a significant role in the series, and as the son of Wanda, his story feels like it is just beginning.

Agatha All Along’s ending also ended with the hint at more to come for some of these characters, with the possibility of Aubrey Plaza continuing her role as Death in the MCU. Now that Billy will play a bigger role in the universe, it’s possible that he could eventually come face-to-face with Wanda Maximoff, but that is only if she comes back from the dead.

The MCU’s Death Was Missing One Power Agatha Only Hinted At

In Marvel Comics, Death is able to resurrect the dead at will, but Agatha All Along never showed her doing that, opting for Death’s MCU power level to be showcased throughout via different abilities. It seemed like she was about to bring Alice back from the dead towards the end of the series, but instead was ushering her soul away. However, it’s confirmed during the show that the MCU version of Death still has the capacity to heal, which suggests she may also have her comic resurrection powers.

During the events of Agatha All Along, Rio healed Agatha’s hand, showing a small portion of her powers and hinting at the idea of her being Death. While her identity wasn’t outright revealed that she was until a few episodes later, the idea of her healing Agatha lends itself to the idea that she can also resurrect the dead, a power that might be shown at some point in the MCU.

Agatha Defying Death Is The Perfect Way To Set Up Scarlet Witch’s Return

By the end of Agatha All Along, Agatha is dead, but she appears to Billy as a ghost and promises to help him find Tommy. During the series, Death tells Agatha that it was either her or Billy that had to die at the end of the Witches’ Road. Agatha eventually embraces Death with a kiss, sacrificing herself in the process so that Billy may live and find his brother, Tommy.

Though it wasn’t outright directly stated, Agatha and Death were at one point in a relationship, adding another layer to the two characters’ conflict throughout the series.

This isn’t the end of Agatha’s story, though, as she reappears to Billy as a ghost – showing her soul doesn’t go with Death into the next life – and instead decides to help Billy find Tommy. With Agatha defying death and choosing to help Billy, it would make sense for Death to resurrect the Scarlet Witch given she serves as Agatha’s nemesis, and since this would complicate Billy’s mission and torment Agatha even further, which seems to be exactly the kind of petty thing Death would do to her.

Scarlet Witch Is Essential For Billy’s Future MCU Story

Billy going after Tommy looks to play a significant role in the future of the character in the MCU. Not only will it allow the two to be reunited after essentially dying at the end of WandaVision, but they both are members of the Young Avengers – a superhero team the MCU has been slowly building up to over the course of Phases 4 and 5. On top of that, there is still a lot of ground to cover regarding their relationship with Wanda.

They will still have to reckon with the fact that their mother turned into one of the most powerful villains in the MCU.

If and when Billy and Tommy reunite with each other, they will still have to reckon with the fact that their mother turned into one of the most powerful villains in the MCU, and work through the nature of their own existence, since they were created through Wanda’s magic. It almost feels impossible for them to do both of those things without confronting her at some point. This would make Wanda’s resurrection in the MCU an incredibly important moment for the development of these characters.

Only time will tell if Scarlet Witch will actually return to the MCU or not. Her actions since the beginning of the Multiverse Saga have been significant for the MCU in a number of ways, and her own series, WandaVision, successfully launched one spin-off, with another already on the way. At some point, it feels like Scarlet Witch has to come back, and after Agatha All Along introduced Death into the MCU, the pieces for her return are all in place.
