After Jason Momoa’s Lobo Casting, Henry Cavill’s Redemption in James Gunn’s DC Universe Feels Inevitable

The DC Universe is in the midst of a major transformation under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership, and recent casting news has only fueled speculation about what’s next for the franchise. With Jason Momoa officially taking on the role of Lobo—a move that surprised few given how perfectly he embodies the cigar-chomping, space-bounty-hunting antihero—it’s hard not to wonder what this means for other beloved actors from the Snyderverse.

One name that instantly comes to mind? Henry Cavill.

After his Superman tenure was controversially cut short, fans have been desperate for his return in some capacity. And now, with Momoa proving that former DCEU actors can find new life in Gunn’s revamped universe, Cavill’s redemption arc might just be on the horizon.

Could we actually see Henry Cavill back in the DC Universe? And if so, who could he play? Let’s dive in.

Jason Momoa’s Lobo: The Game-Changer

Jason Momoa has been attached to the DCEU since 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but despite his success as Aquaman, rumors swirled for years that he was far more interested in playing Lobo. Fans had long speculated that his gruff voice, towering frame, and larger-than-life personality made him a perfect fit for the Main Man, and now that speculation has turned into reality.

His casting proves that James Gunn isn’t against bringing back former DCEU actors in completely new roles. This is a significant shift from the assumption that Gunn would wipe the slate clean and recast everyone.

With Momoa now embracing his true passion project, it sets a precedent: Actors from the previous DC era aren’t completely out of the picture—they just need to be placed in the right roles. And that’s where Cavill comes in.

Henry Cavill’s Superman Exit: A DC Tragedy

Cavill’s Superman has one of the most frustrating journeys in modern superhero cinema. He was introduced in 2013’s Man of Steel, a divisive film that has since gained a dedicated fanbase. His portrayal of the Kryptonian hero was powerful, grounded, and charismatic—yet it never got the proper follow-through it deserved.

Instead of a direct Man of Steel sequel, Cavill’s Superman was thrown into Batman v Superman, a film that positioned him as a divisive figure rather than the hopeful icon he was meant to be. His next appearance in Justice League (both the theatrical version and Zack Snyder’s Justice League) only fueled frustration, as he never truly got the time to shine.

Then, in late 2022, after years of speculation, Cavill made a shocking return as Superman in Black Adam’s post-credit scene, seemingly setting up a long-awaited comeback. Just weeks later, James Gunn announced his reboot of the DCU, revealing that Cavill would not be continuing as Superman.

To say that fans were outraged would be an understatement. It felt like a cruel bait-and-switch.

But if Jason Momoa can transition from Aquaman to Lobo, why can’t Cavill also get a second chance?

Who Could Henry Cavill Play in the New DCU?

If Cavill isn’t returning as Superman, there are still a number of roles that would allow him to flex his talents in the new DCU.

1. Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)

While many expect Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner to be the lead Lantern in Superman: Legacy, Hal Jordan’s role in the DCU remains open. Cavill’s charisma and strong presence could make him a fantastic Hal Jordan, bringing a seasoned, battle-hardened take on the character.

2. Brainiac

Imagine Henry Cavill flipping the script and returning to the DCU as a villain. Brainiac, one of Superman’s most formidable foes, is long overdue for a live-action adaptation. Cavill could bring both menace and intelligence to the role, making him a chilling presence in the franchise.

3. Jor-El

If Cavill’s Superman days are truly over, there’s one poetic way to bring him back—as Superman’s father, Jor-El. Richard Donner’s Superman (1978) famously cast Marlon Brando in this role, and Cavill could follow in those footsteps, playing the wise and tragic Kryptonian scientist who sends his son to Earth.

4. Orion (New Gods)

With Gunn’s love for Jack Kirby’s cosmic lore, it’s only a matter of time before the New Gods make their way into the DCU. Cavill could play Orion, the conflicted son of Darkseid, who struggles between his violent nature and his heroic destiny.

5. The Authority’s Apollo

One of the most interesting upcoming DCU projects is The Authority, a film about a morally complex superhero team. In the comics, Apollo is a super-powered hero often compared to Superman—but with a far more aggressive and pragmatic approach to justice. Cavill’s casting would not only fit the character but also serve as a brilliant meta-commentary on his past as the Man of Steel.

Why James Gunn Should Bring Cavill Back

Beyond fan service, there’s a practical reason for Gunn to consider Cavill’s return: star power.

Despite his DCU exit, Cavill remains one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. His devoted fanbase has followed him from The Witcher to Argylle, and his return to the DC Universe in any role would generate massive hype.

Moreover, bringing Cavill back would also help mend fences with fans who were disappointed by his Superman departure. While Gunn’s decision to reboot was understandable from a creative perspective, there’s no denying that Cavill’s abrupt exit left many fans bitter. Reintroducing him in a fresh role would be a clever way to turn the tide.

The Bottom Line: Cavill’s Return is More Likely Than Ever

Jason Momoa’s transition to Lobo proves that the DCU reboot isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about reinventing it. If Momoa can get a second chance in a new role, so can Henry Cavill.

Whether it’s as Green Lantern, Brainiac, Jor-El, or a completely unexpected character, one thing is certain: Cavill still has a place in the DC Universe. And after everything he’s been through, he deserves a redemption arc as much as any superhero.
