Prior to joining the Royal Family, Meghan Markle worked in Hollywood as an actress, and briefly as one of those briefcase ladies on a game show.
She was still starring in a leading role in ‘Suits’ when she met and married Harry, prompting her to quit acting altogether. A bit like Grace Kelly in the beginning, but then the story turns.
Deciding that royal life is not for them, Harry and Meghan decided to move to California to build a different kind of life for their family. She and Harry may have lost their HRH titles in doing so, but she gained something else, something she perhaps even cherishes more. The freedom to brand and style herself anyhow she wants.
Fashion Expert Weighs In On Princess Kate and Meghan Markle’s Differing Fashion Senses
According to fashion editor Amber Graafland, Kate and Meghan have very different tastes when it comes to modifying their attires. While Kate is happy to do some garment adjustments to cover up more, Meghan seems keen to want to reveal more flesh with her alterations.
She explained, “Take the red Carlina Herrera gown that she altered for the LA Children’s Hospital Gala earlier this year. First debuted in 2021, the gown originally consisted of a bandeau style dress fitted with a flowing overskirt. Meghan upcycled the dress by removing the overskirt to reveal the figure-hugging silhouette underneath.”
She continued, “This clever tweak transformed the gown from a conservative style to one exuding red carpet-worthy glamour. Now that Meghan is no longer restricted by royal protocol, she doesn’t have to watch her necklines or her hemlines.”
“While Kate’s seamstress is busy making sure her clothes don’t ever reveal too much, Meghan only has to worry about looking her best and maximising her camera angles.”
So I guess Meghan has finally found her fashion freedom again.

Speaking on Kate’s style, Amber said: “While their individual styles are unique, one thing they do share is a penchant for altering existing clothing items. Kate Middleton is unquestionably the master of this, often altering clothes to make them look more modest, and in line with royal protocol.”
She added: “This clever up-cycling of gowns allows her to make more sustainable and appropriate fashion choices, and she’s become very adept at it.”
On the other hand, Meghan’s alterations have nothing to do with trying to make a dress more modest.
As part of the Royal Family, however, Meghan did make the effort to cover up more. “While Meghan isn’t averse to making outfits more modest, she deployed this technique for her royal tour of Australia by sewing up two rather revealing side slits on a Veronica Beard dress, the restrictions on what she can and can’t wear are far less rigid these days.”
Meghan Markle’s Style Has Evolved Since Leaving The Royal Family
Meghan had previously been open about changing her fashion style when she was still a part of the Royal Family. In an interview with Fabulous, Graafland revealed that Meghan’s fashion post-Royal Family is now more fearless.
