🔥 Sam Takes the Shield: Brave New World Writer Confirms Wilson’s Dominance in the New MCU Era

Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is set to be the MCU Avengers’ new leader in Avengers: Doomsday, as confirmed by Captain America: Brave New World writer. After giving up and recovering the Captain America shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson faced his first full-fledged supervillain threat in Captain America: Brave New World, where he defeated two of Hulk’s most powerful enemies. Along the way, Thaddeus Ross reminded the MCU’s new Captain America how necessary it is for him to assemble a new Avengers team, and of course, to lead it himself.

In an interview with Comic Book Movie, Captain America: Brave New World writer Rob Edwards teases Sam Wilson’s role as the Avengers’ new leader in Avengers: Doomsday, where Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is confirmed to return. Edwards confirms his writing work is limited to Captain America: Brave New World, but the events of Sam Wilson’s first MCU movie certainly laid the foundations for a team leader role in the MCU’s next Avengers movie. Read Rob Edwards’ comments below:

“He’s Captain America now, so arguably, he’s running the show. I think that’s the next step. I’m just guessing as a fan, but I think that’s where you go with Doomsday. You recreate the Avengers as was suggested in the movie. I’m on for the ride now. I can’t wait for the next one.”

Edwards also addresses Captain America: Brave New World‘s reshoots. Captain America: Brave New World‘s reshoots brought several changes to the Phase 5 movie, including the removal of characters like Rosa Salazar’s Diamondback and aesthetic changes like the appearance of Leader’s Gamma-mutated head. Rob Edwards describes the reshoots as a necessary step in a production the size of Captain America: Brave New World. Edwards says:

“It’s part of the process. There’s this wealth of…there’s so many comic books, so many thoughts. Everything takes these different roads and, at the end, you just have to make some choices. And not all of the choices are easy, and you just hope to wind up with the best movie…and I think we did.”

What Rob Edwards’ Captain America: Brave New World Comments Mean For Sam Wilson

Captain America Will Likely Be One Of Avengers: Doomsday’s Protagonists

Sam Wilson has been preparing to lead the Avengers even before Captain America: Brave New World, having fought side by side with Steve Rogers since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Sam Wilson participated in multiple Avengers battles, had an even bigger role within a hero team between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, and most importantly, assembled the Avengers to help Steve Rogers in the Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World strengthened Sam Wilson’s abilities as a solo hero.

There have been limited opportunities to create a new Avengers team since Avengers: Endgame. Thaddeus Ross’ idea of assembling a new Avengers team couldn’t materialize in Captain America: Brave New World, but Doctor Doom’s multiversal threat might force the world’s currently active heroes to join forces in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. Whether Captain America gets a team together before or during Avengers: Doomsday is yet to be seen.

Captain America Needs To Run The Show In Avengers: Doomsday

Anthony Mackie’s Captain America is set to have a key role in Avengers: Doomsday as the new leader of the Avengers, but Avengers: Doomsday needs to reflect that. Sam Wilson’s leadership, decision-making, and communication skills need to shine throughout the crossover movie, similarly to how Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers kept the original team together through several battles and crises throughout the Infinity Saga. Fortunately, Sam Wilson displayed these qualities in Captain America: Brave New World.
