🎮💥 Minecraft Movie Obliterates 4 New Releases in Box Office Blitz — Barely Drops in Week 2! 🔥

A Minecraft Movie is outstripping all four of the weekend’s major new release movies thanks to a slim drop in its sophomore weekend. The video game adaptation, which was directed by Jared Hess, features a star-studded cast that includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks. The theatrical release of A Minecraft Movie kicked off with a $162.7 million domestic opening weekend that is not only the best of 2025 so far, but the best for any video game movie in history, surpassing the previous record-holder, which was 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.4 million).

Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, A Minecraft Movie is projected to take in a 3-day total of $80 million at the domestic box office by the end of its sophomore weekend. This drop of roughly 48% sees it taking in more than enough for it to claim No. 1 on the chart for the second weekend in a row, outstripping its new release competitors The King of Kings, Drop, The Amateur, and Warfare. In fact, it has earned nearly double the opening weekends of all four movies combined, which comes out to $49.85 million.

Additionally, its cumulative total of $280.3 million makes it the highest-grossing domestic movie of the year so far, surpassing the previous No. 1 title, which was Captain America: Brave New World ($199.6 million). See the full Top 5 chart for the weekend below:

This is the second weekend of the year when four new releases have debuted on the chart simultaneously. The faith-based animated movie The King of Kings took a surprise lead, landing at No. 2 with a nearly $20 million debut, but both the A24 war movie Warfare (No. 4) and the Blumhouse thriller Drop (No. 5) are getting solid starts despite rounding out the bottom of the chart, because the former only cost $20 million while the latter cost $11 million.

The previous weekend featuring four new releases was the weekend of March 28, when A Working Man, The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 1, The Woman in the Yard, and Death of a Unicorn all debuted in the Top 5.

The Rami Malek action movie The Amateur may not be so lucky despite debuting at No. 3 with $15 million, because it reportedly cost $60 million to make, which likely means that it needs to gross $150 million to break even, a mutiplier that would be out of this world even for a movie with far superior reviews to its 61% Rotten Tomatoes score.

With so many new releases swarming the Top 5, the previous No. 2 through No. 5 titles have all fallen precipitously. The Jason Statham action movie A Working Man tumbled from No. 2 to No. 7 in its third weekend with $3.06 million (-58%), the live-action Snow White fell from No. 4 to No. 8 with $2.8 million (-53%) in its fourth weekend, and the Blumhouse horror movie The Woman in the Yard went from No. 5 to No. 9 with $2.1 million in its third weekend (-54%).

Meanwhile, The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2 had a more precipitous drop in its sophomore weekend, going from No. 3 to No. 10 with $931,600 (-87%). The Fathom Events presentation of the faith-based TV series was destined for a more substantial drop, because it has been replaced by the new installment, The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3, which debuted at No. 6 with $5.8 million, making it the first of these weekly season 5 episode packages to debut outside the Top 5.

What This Means For A Minecraft Movie

It Is All Uphill From Here

One roadblock that could have posed a huge risk is the fact that the budget of A Minecraft Movie is reportedly $150 million. Because theaters keep half of ticket sales and marketing costs aren’t factored into production budgets, this means that the movie’s break-even point is most likely somewhere around $375 million or more. However, going into the weekend, the smash hit had already surpassed the $350 million milestone worldwide. While its international numbers for the weekend won’t come until later on Sunday, its domestic total alone has most likely already put it in the black.

It will almost certainly become a billion-dollar movie…

This means that the video game movie is likely already turning out pure profit after fewer than 10 days in theaters. It has easily overcome the middling A Minecraft Movie reviews that earned it a Rotten score of 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, though its domestic sophomore weekend has dipped below that of The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($92.4 million). Regardless, if it stays on its current trajectory and continues to have relatively slim week-on-week drops for a major blockbuster, it will almost certainly become a billion-dollar movie by the end of its run.

Our Take On The Weekend Box Office

A Minecraft Movie Could Continue To Dominate

Considering how much box office oxygen is being consumed by A Minecraft Movie, it seems highly likely that its streak at No. 1 will continue beyond just two weekends. Its third weekend seems like it could also be a lock, as it will be facing up against another raft of mid- to low-budget new releases, namely Sinners, Sneaks, and The Wedding Banquet. The upcoming The Accountant 2 and Until Dawn debut the following weekend, which combined could potentially pose a threat, but the movie could potentially keep its streak going all the way until Marvel’s Thunderbolts* debuts on May 2.
