“DON’T LET GO OF MY HAND…” The video captures the final words of a climber who fell from a height of over 150 meters to the ground and died, while his terrified friend was forced to stand and watch helplessly, only able to cling to the cliff face.

Shafiq Noorani, a 52-year-old experienced mountaineer from Aurora, Colorado, lost his life in a tragic fall on Citadel Peak on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025. The incident unfolded during the descent from the 13,294-foot summit along a challenging ridge route in the Continental Divide area near Eisenhower Tunnel. Noorani and his female climbing partner, both well-equipped and seasoned, were navigating the exposed terrain when he suddenly fell more than 500 feet into the basin below. His partner, stranded on a narrow ledge at approximately 12,800 feet, witnessed the entire horrifying sequence and immediately called 911 around 2 p.m.

The Clear Creek County Coroner confirmed Noorani died from blunt force trauma upon impact. The exact cause of the fall remains undetermined and likely will never be fully known, according to Steve Wilson, public information officer for the Alpine Rescue Team. “The exact nature of the fall is not known,” Wilson stated, adding that even with experience, equipment, knowledge, and skills, “tragic accidents can still happen and unfortunately, they still happen every day.” He emphasized that the route was not unreasonable for the climbers’ level, ruling out obvious recklessness.

Rescue efforts proved arduous. The Alpine Rescue Team, a volunteer organization, was paged for an injured mountaineer who had taken a fall. Strong winds and difficult terrain complicated access, turning the operation into a seven-hour ordeal. A Colorado National Guard helicopter eventually located Noorani’s body in the basin and winched his surviving partner to safety. She had remained precariously perched on the rock face, unable to move without risking her own fall, until rescuers reached her.

Noorani’s death has left his family and the climbing community in profound grief. His younger brother Husein shared an emotional tribute: “There is so much to learn from the way Shafiq lived, but right now, just imagining reconstructing our lives without him is so, so painful. We don’t want to do it. We love and miss you so much, Shafiq. Our Shafiq.” Friends and loved ones described him as gentle-hearted, generous, and deeply committed to helping others. He supported a school in Nepal, purchased desks for a school in Moshi, Tanzania, sponsored students internationally, donated to various organizations, and made a habit of picking up trash on hiking trails. A celebration of life was held in Denver on January 18, 2026, where these acts of kindness were remembered alongside his passion for the mountains.

The tragedy highlights the unforgiving nature of high-altitude mountaineering, even for prepared individuals. Citadel Peak, visible from Loveland Ski Area across Interstate 70, features jagged ridges and significant exposure that demand precision and caution. While the climbers were experienced and the route appropriate, the incident underscores that no level of preparation eliminates all risk. Loose rock, fatigue, momentary loss of balance, or environmental factors can turn a controlled descent into catastrophe in seconds.

Broader climbing safety discussions have resurfaced in the wake of this event. Experts stress the importance of redundant systems—multiple anchors, proper rope management, and conservative decision-making on exposed terrain. Mental resilience plays a critical role; climbers must train to manage fear, communicate effectively under stress, and recognize when conditions warrant turning back. The psychological impact on the surviving partner cannot be overstated. Forced to watch a companion fall while immobilized on a ledge, she endured hours of isolation and trauma before rescue. Such experiences often lead to survivor’s guilt, PTSD, and long-term emotional scars, with peer support networks in the climbing community providing essential resources for recovery.

No video footage of the incident has been publicly released or referenced in reports, though the vivid eyewitness account from the partner has fueled widespread sharing of the story. Instead, the real horror lies in the silent helplessness: one climber vanishing into the void while the other clings to survival, powerless to intervene.

This accident adds to the annual toll of mountaineering fatalities in Colorado, where falls remain a leading cause of death. Organizations like the Alpine Rescue Team and Colorado National Guard respond to dozens of such calls each year, often in life-threatening conditions. Their efforts saved one life here, but could not prevent the loss of another.

Noorani’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the mountains’ dual nature—sources of profound beauty, challenge, and connection, yet capable of swift, merciless retribution. His legacy endures through the lives he touched and the trails he cleaned, even as the climbing world mourns a gentle soul taken too soon. For those who venture into the high places, the incident reinforces eternal truths: respect the risk, prepare relentlessly, and cherish every moment with those who share the rope—because one slip can change everything forever.
