All about ‘Virgin River’ season 7: Renewal status, potential plot and more

Virgin River season 7 is officially in the works and fans of the beloved Netflix series are eagerly anticipating its next chapter. This isn’t surprising, given that the picturesque town, nestled in the heart of Northern California, has become a second home to viewers as they have grown to love its quirky characters, intricate relationships and heartfelt storylines.

At the centre of it all are Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson), the show’s leading couple, whose on-again, off-again romance has kept audiences hooked.

Season 6 of the show, released recently in December 2024, left fans on a high note, with Mel and Jack finally tying the knot in a beautiful, intimate ceremony surrounded by their closest friends and family. However, the season also ended on a cliffhanger, with Lizzie’s (played by Sarah Dugdale) pregnancy reveal and several other storylines left unresolved.

Additionally, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Netflix Tudum, “There’s a lot more to go here with these characters,” which has left fans wondering what’s in store for the newlyweds, as well as the rest of the town’s residents.

On that note, here’s everything we know so far about Virgin River season 7, from its speculative plot to its potential release date.

Despite initial concerns that season 7 might not materialise, Netflix has officially renewed the show, making it the longest-running original scripted series on the platform. The news arrived ahead of season 6’s December 2024 premiere, with production on the 7th instalment already underway.

According to a report by Deadline, as of December 2024, writers were busily crafting new episodes, with scripts expected to be finalised by January. The filming is slated to commence in spring 2025.

So, do we have a release date for Virgin River season 7?

No, there has been no official announcement by Netflix or the makers about the release date of Virgin River season 7. However, the show’s past production timelines can give us a rough idea.

Looking back, filming for season 4 wrapped up approximately seven months before its July 2022 premiere. Similarly, seasons 5 and 6 followed comparable timelines, with season 5 taking around 10 months and season 6 taking seven months. Assuming the production team adheres to a similar schedule, it’s possible that season 7 could debut as early as December 2025 or sometime in summer 2026.

What could be the potential plot of season 7?

Season 6 left fans reeling with its dramatic finale, packed with a big wedding, twists, and unanswered questions. Mel and Jack tied the knot, but their journey is far from over. With Marley (played by Rachel Drance) — Mel’s patient — asking the latter to adopt her baby, the possibility of Mel and Jack becoming parents is an exciting new angle.

Meanwhile, the love triangle between Brie (played by Zibby Allen), Mike (played by Marco Grazzini) and Brady (played by Ben Hollingsworth) is still unresolved. Who will Brie choose?

Along with these new dynamics, season 7 should delve into these new dynamics, as well as the lingering mystery of Charmaine’s (played by Lauren Hammersley) twins’ disappearance. The possibilities are endless.

While story details for season 7 are still under wraps, creator Smith has revealed to Deadline that the series will pick up mere moments from where we last left off. “The next season picks up like two hours later, there is not a time jump this time,” Smith confirmed.

Smith also hinted at what’s to come, saying, “I can’t promise any more weddings. We are a little weddinged-out after Season 6.”

However, he did reveal that the next season of the drama will explore the aftermath of Brie and Jack’s parents’ secret relationship, as well as Mike’s investigation into the matter. Furthermore, fans can expect to learn more about Mel’s backstory, including her origins as a midwife.

With these exciting developments, season 7 of Virgin River is shaping up to be just as captivating as its predecessors.
