The MCU’s biggest box office bomb could be worth revisiting as it revealed how Deadpool and Wolverine could return to the MCU. Deadpool & Wolverine is a massive win for Marvel as it continues to break records at the box office. It crossed $1 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever with $1.15 billion. Deadpool 3‘s success arrived when Marvel needed it, especially after its last film’s box office results. 2023’s The Marvels was the MCU’s biggest box office bomb, and was the cherry on top of a disastrous year for Marvel and Disney.
The Marvels is the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel and includes leading roles for Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau from Wandavision. Unfortunately, the trio’s team-up didn’t interest audiences as it grossed $206 million worldwide against a budget of $274.8 million. It also wasn’t a hit with critics as it received a mixed 62% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, The Marvels is still important to the events of the MCU, partly due to its post-credit scene, which could set up Deadpool and Wolverine’s return.
The Marvels Ended With Monica Rambeau Stuck In What Might Be The Fox Universe
Monica Had A Surprise Encounter With Two X-Men Members
In The Marvels’ climax, Monica Rambeau gets trapped in an alternate universe after closing the rupture between realities that developed after their fight with Dar-Benn. During The Marvels‘ post-credit scene, she wakes up in a strange hospital room, unsure of how she got there. She sees an alternate version of her mother, Maria, who is Binary in this universe rather than the Captain Marvel variant from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Monica also meets Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, who is trying to figure out how she got into their universe.
While it’s unclear what dimension she’s in, some hints indicate she may be in the Fox universe. Beast is played by Grammer, who last played the part in X-Men: The Last Stand. It could be a variant of Beast, but it also presents the possibility that it’s the same Beast from the original X-Men trilogy. This scene also uses themes from X2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past, further hinting it may be Earth-10005 a.k.a. the Fox universe. While Binary was never in Fox’s X-Men films, there’s a chance she joined the team after these films ended.
Deadpool And Wolverine Could Go To The MCU With Monica
Deadpool Could Help Monica Find Her Way Home
Deadpool & Wolverine ends with Wade Wilson and Logan staying in the Fox universe after saving it from Cassandra Nova and the TVA. However, there is a chance they could still be important to the MCU, and the Avengers may need their help. The question becomes how do these characters cross over to Earth-616? Fortunately, Monica’s arrival in the Fox universe could create a bridge between the two realities. Monica needs to find a way back to her reality and could require Deadpool’s help.
Deadpool is the only character in the Fox universe who has been to the MCU. He used Cable’s time-travel machine from Deadpool 2 to travel to Earth-616, attempting to join the Avengers. After Happy Hogan rejected him, he traveled back to the Fox universe, disappointed but fully aware of the MCU. Since he is the only person who knows where Monica is from, he could use Cable’s device to get him and Monica back to the MCU, taking Wolverine as well. He could also ask the TVA for a favor since he stopped the Time Ripper from destroying every universe.
Could Deadpool And Wolverine Appear In Captain Marvel 3?
Audiences Still Don’t Know When Deadpool And Wolverine Will Return
Captain Marvel 3 likely won’t happen after The Marvels‘ disastrous box office performance. Marvel is shifting its strategy, focusing on more trustworthy brands that are guaranteed to return a profit. However, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau still have a future in the MCU, and they could connect with Deadpool and Wolverine. If Deadpool does travel to the MCU with Monica Rambeau, it would likely happen in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
Secret Wars is a massive crossover event between multiple universes, setting up a collision course between the MCU and the Fox universe. These aren’t the only universes that will collide, as Secret Wars could also connect to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man universe, and whatever universe Fantastic Four: First Steps occurs in. Deadpool & Wolverine may not be the last time these characters appear in an MCU project, but don’t expect them to be in another Captain Marvel sequel.
