“We Smelled Something Foul in the Area — Then We Called the Police” — Witness Reveals Harrowing Details of How Lil Jon’s Son Jonathan Smith Was Found in the Pond, Suicide Suspected

The discovery of 21-year-old Jonathan Smith Jr. — only son of legendary rapper and producer Lil Jon — has ended one of the most agonizing missing-person cases Atlanta has seen in years.

On the morning of February 8, 2026, a resident walking his dog along the edge of a small, tree-lined retention pond in the Panthersville area of DeKalb County made the grim discovery that officially ended the five-day search.

“We smelled something really bad,” the witness, who asked to remain anonymous, later told local reporters. “At first we thought it was a dead animal — maybe a raccoon or something. But the smell was… different. Heavy. Wrong. My dog refused to go any closer. That’s when I looked through the reeds and saw the shape in the water.”

He immediately called 911. Within twenty minutes the pond was surrounded by yellow crime-scene tape. DeKalb County Police dive team, already familiar with the location after earlier searches, entered the water again. This time they didn’t come up empty-handed.

The body was located in approximately 8 feet of water, partially concealed by thick aquatic vegetation and submerged debris. Officers say the young man was fully clothed — wearing the same black hoodie, dark jeans and red high-top sneakers family and friends had described when he was reported missing on February 3.

Preliminary visual identification was made at the scene. Later that afternoon the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the body was that of Jonathan Smith Jr. An autopsy was performed February 9. While full results (including toxicology) are still pending, officials have indicated the death is being investigated as a suspected suicide. No evidence of foul play has been found.

Last known movements

Jonathan was last seen in the early morning hours of February 3. According to friends and family he had attended a small gathering at a private residence in Stone Mountain. He left alone around 3:30 a.m., telling one person he was “going to clear his head.” His phone last pinged from the Panthersville area shortly after 4 a.m. After that — nothing.

He did not arrive at his apartment, did not answer calls or texts, and never logged into any social-media accounts. When he still hadn’t contacted anyone by late afternoon on the 3rd, his mother filed a missing-person report. Lil Jon posted a single, devastating black-square message on Instagram Stories that evening: “My son is missing. Prayers only. Thank you.”

The following five days saw one of the largest volunteer-assisted searches in recent DeKalb County history. Hundreds of people — friends, fellow artists, church members, local residents — combed wooded areas, drainage ditches, abandoned lots and every body of water within a five-mile radius of the last phone ping.

The pond where he was ultimately found had already been searched twice. Divers said poor visibility (less than 18 inches), thick mud, and heavy underwater vegetation made it extremely difficult to see anything. It was only after the distinctive odor became noticeable that a renewed, more thorough sweep was ordered.

The pain behind the headlines

Jonathan Smith Jr. was described by everyone who knew him as gentle, funny, creative, and deeply loved. He had recently started college classes in audio engineering — following in his father’s footsteps in the music industry — and was known among friends as someone who “always had your back.” There were no public reports of mental-health crises, drug problems or suicidal ideation prior to his disappearance.

However, close friends and family members have since spoken (anonymously) about Jonathan struggling quietly with depression for more than a year. They say he had become increasingly withdrawn, was sleeping very little, and had started isolating himself even from people he was normally very close to. No suicide note has been found.

Lil Jon — who turned 54 just weeks before the tragedy — has remained almost completely silent since the recovery. The only additional message he has posted is a single photo of him cradling baby Jonathan years earlier, captioned: “My heart. Forever. 💔”

The hip-hop world has rallied around the family. Tributes have poured in from Ludacris, Usher, T.I., OutKast members, Future, Cardi B, Offset, and dozens of others. Many have shared private memories of watching Jonathan grow up at award shows, backstage at concerts, and family gatherings over the years.

Funeral arrangements are being kept private at the family’s request. A public memorial service is expected sometime in the coming weeks.

The tragedy has reignited urgent conversations about mental-health resources for young Black men, the stigma that still surrounds therapy and medication in many communities, and the hidden struggles that can exist behind even the most seemingly charmed lives.

For now the music is quiet. The parties are on hold. And one of hip-hop’s most recognizable voices is simply a grieving father holding on to memories of a son who was loved far more than words can ever express.

Rest in peace, Jonathan Smith Jr. You were deeply loved. You are deeply missed.
