Samson teen thankful for ‘American Idol’ experience; looks towards bright future in music

The ‘American Idol’ journey for the Samson teen, Crews Wright, has come to an end after his performance in the head-to-head round Monday night.

“Not making it to the Top 24, it’s devastating, but on the same standpoint, it’s just one of those things,” Wright said. “You can’t let it get you down because you have too much going for yourself.”

Wright and his partner, Kam’ron Smith, another country music singer, performed “How Great Thou Art,” one of 30 songs they had to pick from a selected list. They then had to learn and rehearse the song in a short allotted time.

“It was very, very hectic. I don’t see anything personally I could have done differently,” Wright said. “I think I presented it well. I think he and I could have worked together a little more if we had a little bit more time to piece it together.”

Wright says some people have expressed to him that the judges possibly robbed him.

While he did not blame them for doing that, he says some judges pushed hopefuls through based on prior performances and not solely from that night during the head-to-head, which could appear as controversial.

“To me, I don’t think it was accurately displayed for their talent in that specific round, just because of the way they were judging,” Wright said. “If you’re going to judge on today, if it’s yesterday, then yesterday, but it’s not only not fair to me, but others.”

Nevertheless, he says the journey was unforgettable. He met lifelong friends who all want to make it in the music industry.

“I’m appreciative of ‘American Idol’, it was phenomenal to be in a room of so much talent, even if I didn’t make it to the top 24,” Wright said. “We are still going to support our friends, I mean, they earned it.”

Wright says while it is a bump in the road, he says ‘American Idol’ has been the biggest stepping stone in his musical career so far.

He has no plans to let the elimination slow him down.

“We got some new music coming out, booking shows like it’s nobody’s business,” Wright said. “I appreciate everybody’s support during this whole thing.”

Wright says he is unsure about trying for ‘American Idol’ again.
