Carrie Underwood Under Fire for “Unfair Treatment” of Jamal Roberts on American Idol, Fans Say

Tension Builds After Disney Night as Idol Fans Question Carrie Underwood’s Judging Style

As American Idol Season 23 nears its epic finale, the drama isn’t just on stage — it’s at the judges’ table. Following Monday night’s episode, Carrie Underwood is facing intense backlash from fans who claim her critique of Top 3 finalist Jamal Roberts was unfair and overly harsh.

The second night of Disney Week aired live as viewers saw two more contestants eliminated, leaving Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, and Slater Nalley to advance to the final three. But it was Carrie’s response to one of Jamal’s performances that stirred up a wave of controversy.

Jamal Roberts’ “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” Sparks Standing Ovation — Except From Carrie

Jamal, a 27-year-old physical education teacher and father of three, delivered a crowd-pleasing rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” famously featured in Disney’s Remember the Titans.

The crowd was energized, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie stood up in ovation, clearly impressed by Jamal’s soulful energy and command of the stage.

But Carrie Underwood remained seated — and when it came time to share her feedback, she didn’t hold back.

Carrie’s Comment: Encouragement or Unfair Critique?

Carrie started with a compliment, acknowledging Jamal’s “incredible voice.” But her tone quickly shifted as she criticized his lack of movement during the performance:

“I feel like you missed such an opportunity to move around and entertain,” she said.
“We’re getting close to the end here. It’s time to pull out all the stops. Pull us in — not just with your voice but with everything else. Let’s go.”

Fans React: “She Was Out of Line”

The internet wasted no time weighing in. On social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, fans expressed disappointment — and even outrage — at Carrie’s comments:

“Please be fair and balanced in your feedback. That’s all we ask.”

“You were out of line about Jamal tonight. Everyone else stands still. Why does he have to move?”

“That criticism wasn’t fair — Breanna and John both stood still too!”

“The next time Jamal performed, the crowd shut Carrie down with cheers. That says everything.”

“She needs to be replaced next season!”

 A Double Standard?

Viewers pointed out that Carrie had praised John Foster for his emotional performance while seated for the entire song — and yet seemed to expect more physical energy from Jamal.

“You swooned over John sitting in a chair,” one user wrote, “but criticized Jamal for not moving around? That’s not fair.”

Others accused her of showing favoritism and being “rude” in her delivery.

Will This Impact the Finale?

With just one episode left — the season finale airing Sunday, May 19 at 8 PM ET on ABC — fan perception of the judges could play a role in final voting. Jamal Roberts remains one of the top contenders, and this backlash may only galvanize his supporters.

Whether you side with Carrie’s tough-love approach or believe she crossed a line, one thing’s clear:

The American Idol finale just got even more intense.

🎥 Watch Jamal’s full performance and decide for yourself — was Carrie right to push him harder, or did she go too far?
