The Harry Potter book series is one of the most popular fantasy book series of all time. And a big part of the books’ popularity are the many intriguing and captivating characters, from Harry Potter himself to his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Some of the professors at Hogwarts are also a popular part of the series, like Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall. While there are many Hogwarts professors in Harry Potter who also appear in the movies, there are others who never appeared on screen or were only shown in the background once or twice.
Some of those Hogwarts professors who didn’t make it to the movie adaptations never taught Harry Potter. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry, Ron and Hermione take on new classes, which are optional. Hermione takes every single class available, but Harry and Ron only choose a few that interest them. This is why some of those professors at Hogwarts never made it to the screen, as Harry didn’t take their class. In other cases, some of these professors did teach Harry at one point or another, but due to time constraints or other difficulties with the movie adaptations, they never appeared in the Harry Potter movies.

Study of Ancient Runes was a tough subject as it was mostly theoretical, and it involved translating a lot of runes into English. Bathsheda Babbling never appeared in the Harry Potter movies, and the Study of Ancient Runes class was also never shown. Bathsheda Babbling appeared in a list of Hogwarts Professors, but her name isn’t mentioned in the Harry Potter books either, even though Hermione takes the class.
Charity Burbage Was the Professor of Muggle Studies
Image via Warner Bros.
While Professor Charity Burbage appears in one of the Harry Potter movies, her scene is brief and very heartbreaking. Charity appears in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. She is the professor of Muggle Studies that Voldemort takes as a hostage and later kills in front of his Death Eaters, including Draco Malfoy. Charity Burbage begs Snape to save her life, but Snape knows he can’t help her unless he wants to blow up his cover as a double agent.

Charity Burbage stood for everything Voldemort hated. She believed that Muggles and wizards were equals and even wrote an article for the Daily Prophet saying as much. This made her Voldemort’s enemy, and she suffered greatly for it. Hopefully, the upcoming adaptation of Harry Potter will show more of Charity Burbage and her class, making her defiance of Voldemort and tragic death more meaningful. Muggle Studies was an elective subject, and Harry and Ron didn’t take it, but Hermione did.
Cuthbert Binns Was the Professor of History of Magic
Image via Portkey Games
History of Magic is not an elective subject, though many Hogwarts students wish it were. Professor Cuthbert Binns, the only ghost professor at Hogwarts, teaches this subject. Professor Binns was a professor at Hogwarts before his death. One day, he simply took a nap and died in his sleep in the staff room, and became a ghost. He got up as a ghost and continued teaching as if nothing had happened, and he has remained at Hogwarts ever since.

Many find Professor Binns’s class boring, as his teaching methods include simply droning on about different moments in wizarding history without much class participation. Many students take naps or get easily distracted, even playing games during History of Magic. There are a few relevant moments in the Harry Potter books during Professor Binns’ class, however. Professor Binns was the one who told the class about the Chamber of Secrets, something that Professor McGonagall does in the movie adaptation. And in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry falls asleep and has a vision of Voldemort torturing Sirius while taking his History of Magic O.W.L., a vision that later results in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.
Firenze Became a Professor of Divination During Harry’s Fifth Year
Firenze the Centaur helps Harry Potter in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone.
Firenze was a centaur that lived in the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts. Harry first met Firenze in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when he, along with Hermione, Draco Malfoy, and Neville Longbottom, had to serve their detention in the Forest helping Hagrid. Firenze saved Harry’s life as Harry came face to face with Voldemort. And at that moment, Harry also realized that centaurs were unique magical creatures that seemed to know a lot more than they let on.

This Harry Potter Character Had a Much Larger Role in the Books
Harry Potter, as a franchise, has many iconic characters. But one character from the books had a much smaller role in the movies.
Centaurs in Harry Potter have the ability to see the future through the stars. This came in handy for Firenze in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Dolores Umbridge fired Professor Trelawney. Dumbledore hired Firenze to take Professor Trelawney’s place as Professor of Divination, and Firenze accepted as he was having a hard time with his fellow centaurs due to Firenze’s willingness to help humans, something that centaurs heavily disliked. Firenze appears in the first Harry Potter movie, but he doesn’t return once he becomes a Hogwarts professor. After Dolores Umbridge leaves Hogwarts and Professor Trelawney returns to her position at Hogwarts, she and Firenze share the position of Divination Professor, much to Trelawney’s dismay. Many Hogwarts students enjoy Firenze’s class and even become slightly infatuated with the centaur, including Parvati Patil and Lavender Brown.
Septima Vector Was the Professor of Arithmancy

Septima Vector was the professor of Arithmancy at Hogwarts. Another elective subject, Hermione, once again, was the only member of the Golden Trio to take Professor Vector’s class. Arithmancy is the study of numbers and even the ability to predict the future and using numerology. This was Hermione’s favorite subject, even though she never liked Divination and believed that it was a very imprecise branch of magic.
Septima Vector appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, though only for a small moment in the background. She’s never mentioned by name, and her Arithmancy lessons are also never shown in the movie adaptations, nor in the books. However, Professor Vector and her subject are mentioned multiple times in the Harry Potter books. Septima Vector is known as tough and strict, much like Professor McGonagall.

The Fantastic Beasts’ biggest error was the inclusion of an evil wizard that never fit in with the story and came with plenty of controversy.
Due to the dangers of his job and his fondness for dangerous magical creatures, Professor Kettleburn only had one and a half of his original limbs when he retired: an arm and half a leg. Professor Kettleburn didn’t teach Harry, Ron and Hermione, as he retired right at the start of the Golden Trio’s third year, when students can take Care of Magical Creatures. After Professor Kettleburn retired, Hagrid replaced him.
Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank Replaced Hagrid As the Care of Magical Creatures Professor for a While

Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank was a substitute professor of Care of Magical Creatures. She was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when she took over Hagrid’s class after Rita Skeeter wrote a defamatory article about Hagrid. She later returned in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, taking over the class while Hagrid was away on a secret mission for Dumbledore.
Professor Grubbly-Plank was competent and even more popular among some of the students. Unlike Hagrid, Professor Grubbly-Plank didn’t focus on dangerous or strange magical creatures and instead had a fondness for Unicorns. Grubbly-Plank also helped Harry one time when Hedwig was hurt, taking care of Harry’s pet owl and getting her healthy again. Grubbly-Plank left Hogwarts once Hagrid returned to take over his position as Professor of Care of Magical Creatures.
Aurora Sinistra Was the Professor of Astronomy

Professor Aurora Sinistra was the Astronomy professor during Harry, Ron and Hermione’s time at Hogwarts. She first appeared in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets book, though she’s in the background during the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone movie. Professor Sinistra taught the Golden Trio since their first year at Hogwarts, as Astronomy was a mandatory subject for Hogwarts students. Astronomy teaches the movements of the planets and stars, and students, among other things, had to correctly identify a planet’s moons or fill in a blank star chart for their O.W.L.s.
