Reacher’s first spin-off received exceptional response, announcing release date

Neagley and Reacher standing together in Reacher season 2, episode 1, looking ahead

Reacher‘s first spinoff gets an exciting response and filming update from lead star Maria Sten. Reacher season 3 is just days away from premiering, debuting Thursday, February 20 on Prime Video. Based on the Lee Child novel Persuader, with Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher staring down unfinished business from his past, the upcoming episodes will include Sten reprising her role as Frances Neagley in the main cast. She will then lead her own Neagley-focused spinoff, which was first reported in September 2024.

While promoting Reacher season 3 in an interview with Collider, Sten gives a filming update on the upcoming spinoff. The actor, also known for her leading turn in the horror series Channel Zero: The Dream Door, mentioned that the first filming day will happen this week. In the quote below, Sten reflects on the spinoff moving fast and being timed with Reacher:

We are moving quite quickly on it. The first shoot day is tomorrow. They moved fast on that one. That is how they had to approach it, in terms of timing it out with the Reacher show. And it feels very much true to how my experience of the show has been. ‘Am I doing something? Am I not doing something? Oh, I’m doing something. Okay, great. Let’s go.’ So, it’s exciting.”

The spinoff, tentatively titled Neagley, was officially ordered to series at Prime Video this past October. The project will be written by Reacher series creator Nick Santora, who developed the show with Law & Order writer Nicholas Wootton. The duo serves as co-showrunners and executive producers. Although a release window is so far unknown, initial story details have been revealed.

Following the template of the original series and stepping out of the Reacher supporting cast, the spinoff will see Neagley hellbent on justice when she learns that a friend from her past is killed in a suspicious accident. The character will lean on everything she’s learned from Jack Reacher, in addition to her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, to deal with the new threat. More is revealed in the official synopsis, below, including the potential exploration of Neagley’s backstory:

The Untitled Neagley Project focuses on Sten’s Frances Neagley, a private investigator in Jack Reacher’s circle. When she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell bent on justice. Using everything she’s learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil.

Prime Video, at times, likes to announce cast and character details alongside the start of filming. That could be one thing to watch for, with filming getting underway in the coming days. It could be one bit of news to keep an eye on, including whether and how often Ritchson might appear as Jack Reacher on the new show.

A Winning Formula For Prime Video

Neagley is in Reacher season 3, though the character is absent in the novel on which the story is based. That may be to set up the spinoff, as Prime Video hopes that Neagley will find the same success that protagonists like Jack Ryan, Alex Cross, and Jack Reacher received. All three dramas regularly garner billions of minutes viewed on the charts and the streamer has become known for its action thriller stars. Sten could be next.
