How It All Began: Dune: Prophecy Unlocks the Fascinating History of the Bene Gesserit!

Dune: Prophecy

Alison Schapker, the showrunner of Dune: Prophecy, shares insights into how the series fits into the Dune universe.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Schapker reveals how she crafted a unique connection with Denis Villeneuve’s films while respecting their visual and auditory style.

Despite some changes in creative leadership and a challenging production process, Schapker’s experience in sci-fi TV (including Westworld and Altered Carbon) proved invaluable in tackling the ambitious project.

She emphasizes how the show explores the Bene Gesserit’s origin story, focusing on the Harkonnen sisters and their influence on the future.

The series, set 10,148 years before Paul Atreides’ birth, takes viewers to the planet Wallach IX, where the Sisterhood began. While it stays connected to the events of the Dune novels, it also delves into new areas, such as the history of the Harkonnens.

Schapker discusses how the show’s narrative is shaped by the aftermath of the Great Machine Wars, revealing how humanity rebuilds after technology and artificial intelligence caused near extinction.

Despite Villeneuve’s limited involvement due to his focus on Dune: Part Two, Schapker and her team aimed to maintain the films’ high production values while adding their own creative spin.

The series takes inspiration from Sisterhood of Dune, exploring themes of power, identity, and the fear of technological regression, all while building on Villeneuve’s established world.

The challenge was significant, but Schapker expresses pride in the show’s craft and the team’s dedication to honoring the Dune legacy.
