Elon Musk has long been hailed as a tech visionary, an innovative entrepreneur, and even the “real-life Iron Man.” However, when we take a closer look at his career and achievements, a different picture emerges—one that suggests Musk may not be the self-made genius many believe him to be.
Not a Founder, Just an Investor?
A common misconception is that Musk founded Tesla, SpaceX, and PayPal. In reality, he did not create any of these companies from scratch.
Tesla: Musk joined Tesla in 2004, after it had already been founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. He invested early, took control, and later positioned himself as the face of the company, but he was not a founder.
SpaceX: While Musk played a key role in SpaceX’s creation, the company’s success is largely due to the brilliant engineers and scientists behind its projects.
PayPal: Musk didn’t create PayPal. His online banking startup, X.com, merged with Confinity (which actually developed PayPal). He later profited when eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion.
Inherited Wealth and Privilege
Musk’s public persona is that of a self-made billionaire, but his family’s wealth tells a different story. His father, Errol Musk, owned an emerald mine in Zambia, giving Musk access to significant financial resources early in life. Unlike true self-made entrepreneurs, Musk had a considerable head start.
Not a Tech Expert
Unlike Steve Jobs or Bill Gates—who actively shaped the products and technologies their companies produced—Musk has often been criticized for lacking a deep understanding of the technologies his companies use.
He has admitted that he doesn’t write code and is not directly involved in the engineering work.
His “breakthrough ideas” often come from the teams working under him rather than from his own innovations.
Many former Tesla and SpaceX employees describe him as a demanding manager rather than a true innovator.
A Great Businessman, Not a Creator
To Musk’s credit, he has an undeniable talent for marketing, fundraising, and taking risks. He knows how to attract media attention and secure massive investments. However, being a great businessman is not the same as being a great inventor or engineer.
So, is Elon Musk a tech genius? Or is he just a privileged investor who took the right risks at the right time? That’s up to history to decide.
