Rings of Power Season 2 Pays a Powerful Tribute to a Heartbreaking Death

Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power Season 2

The following contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 4, “Eldest,” now streaming on Prime Video.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, one of the most engaging stories isn’t from the J. R. R. Tolkien books. This is a new canon created for the show: the arc involving the healer, Bronwyn, and her son, Theo. They joined the Southlands army in the Season 1 fight against Adar’s forces.

Luckily, they had allies like the Silvan Elf, Arondil, to help out as the show bent continuity. Unfortunately, Bronwyn’s death robbed Theo of his only parent, and snuffed out the romance between Arondir and Bronwyn. However, a resolute Theo is starting to cope, revealing the best way of honoring her untimely, heartbreaking death.

Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 4, “Eldest,” has Arondir deciding he needs to venture out into the woods outside Pelargir. He has to rescue Theo, who was kidnapped in the dark of night in Episode 3. Arondir uses Isildur and the runaway Estrid. They become a mini-fellowship, which leads to them getting stuck in the mud and fighting off a snake monster.

In time, trust is built with Estrid. They eventually meet the Ents, Snaggleroot and Winterbloom. They took Wild Men prisoners, and thought Theo was one of Adar’s followers, too. However, through a speech filled with compassion, Arondir wins them over. They give Theo back after Arondir vows to hunt Adar’s forces down. These villains hurt many trees along the way, and Arondir will avenge them, nodding to the Peter Jackson movies.

This works in his schedule, because he knows he has to bring down Adar and the orcs in any case. When he asks Theo if he’ll join him, however, Theo kindly refuses. It’s a shocking moment, as Theo wanted to be a warrior. But he has more peaceful plans ahead. It’s very much away from a life of violence. He, instead, wants to pay homage to what his mother was about.

Rings of Power Season 2 Reveals Theo Wants To Be a Healer

Rings of Power’s Theo Wants To Take Up Bronwyn’s Legacy

Bronwyn raised Theo in Tirharad. His father left them, but she tried to inspire him by showing him how to keep the village together. She was its healer and a den mother. It’s this caring nature that drew Arondir to her when he passed through and realized maybe he could call this a home someday.

Theo got caught up in his own mess with Sauron’s hilt. But after Galadriel gave him a sword in the battle against Adar, he seemed like he’d lose his anger and try to be a hero. Unfortunately, Bronwyn’s death derailed this. He felt unfettered rage, even towards Arondir. He hated how Arondir tried to be a mentor, claiming he didn’t want another father. Part of it felt like Theo knew Arondir would go after Adar, possibly die, and leave him with more grief.

In the present, he thanks Arondir for the offer and the time spent looking after him. Theo has trauma, but he is processing it much better. He vows to make good on the “promise” he made, hinting that he is following his mother’s wishes. She died a slow, painful death after becoming sick from an orc arrow. It looks like Theo wants to ensure he levels up so no one else can endure what he did. Arondir even calls him the “Lord of Pelargir,” suggesting that Theo can even lead this tribe.

Ultimately, it has fans excited to see what lies in Theo’s future, if he’ll seek mystical help to add to the herbs used for medicine, and what kind of man he’ll be in general as he ascends in station. He doesn’t want to be like his mysterious father. Thankfully, he is on the path to being like his mother and the unlikely role model he found in Arondir.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power streams Thursdays on Prime Video.
