Spoiler alert: Virgin River isn’t a real place!
If you’ve been swept off your feet by the charm, drama and romance of Netflix’s Virgin River, you’re probably wondering: where is Virgin River filmed? Well, you’re not alone. The picturesque settings, gorgeous scenery, and cosy vibe of the show leave us all yearning for a getaway to this seemingly magical town. But, sadly, it’s not a real place.
Season 6 has landed on Netflix, and we are deep in our Virgin River era — and are already eager for season 7. Yes, good news, as of last month, it is officially coming back for another round. It will “explore the honeymoon phase for [Mel and Jack] as they’re building their lives on the farm, which can come with its own obstacles,” as showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Tudum.
As we patiently wait for more Mel and Jack, let’s dive into the stunning filming locations where the beloved Netflix series brings romance and drama to life.
Where is Virgin River filmed?
Vancouver and British Columbia, Canada
The show may be set in California, but it isn’t even filmed in the United States. Instead, Vancouver in Canada serves as the base for much of the filming. With its lush forests, rolling hills, and breath-taking rivers, this area is practically made for a romantic drama.
Canada’s stunning mountain ranges and the Fraser River provide the perfect backdrop to the story of Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson). The dense forests and rolling hills look like they could be hiding all sorts of small-town secrets, and they give Virgin River that dreamy, secluded feel.
Port Coquitlam
The show’s Main Street, where we see Mel walking during her many interactions with the locals, is actually filmed in Port Coquitlam. This quaint suburb of Vancouver has all the small-town charm you’d expect in a place like Virgin River. Here, you’ll spot familiar shops, cafes, and rustic facades that serve as the backdrop for most of the town’s day-to-day activities.
Port Coquitlam’s historic downtown area is full of cute, old-timey buildings with a super friendly vibe, making it the perfect stand-in for a fictional town. It really does feel like you’re stepping into a place where everyone knows everyone.
Murrin Provincial Park
For those breath-taking outdoor scenes — the ones with cascading waterfalls and majestic forests — Murrin Provincial Park takes centre stage. Located just outside of Vancouver, this scenic park is home to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the region, including the famous Quarry Rock, which gives views of the surrounding mountains and water.
Murrin Park offers a mix of winding paths and dramatic cliffs, creating the perfect spot for Virgin River’s outdoor adventures. It’s the kind of place where you could easily imagine Mel taking a peaceful walk or Jack finding solace after a long day of running his bar. It gives the show that natural, untouched beauty that feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Squamish
Squamish, just north of Vancouver, is another key location for the Virgin River series. Nestled between the mountains and the ocean, Squamish has a rugged yet cosy atmosphere that fits the show’s vibe perfectly. The town has that perfect mix of rural charm and outdoor adventure, so it’s easy to picture it as the setting for Virgin River. The surrounding mountains and forests create a tranquil, back-to-nature setting where Mel can escape to regroup and where Jack might sneak off for some quiet reflection after a particularly emotional episode. It’s got all the right ingredients for small-town magic.
Pitt Meadows
Jack’s iconic cabin and the local bar, where many of the show’s heart-to-heart moments take place, are filmed in Pitt Meadows. Located just east of Vancouver, Pitt Meadows is a quiet town with lots of open space, making it the ideal spot to create those intimate, cosy scenes. The vast green fields and tranquil setting of Pitt Meadows mirror the peaceful yet sometimes chaotic life in Virgin River. It’s easy to imagine the bar being the heartbeat of the town, where the locals come together to unwind. Meanwhile, Jack’s cabin, tucked away in a quiet corner, makes for a picture-perfect setting for some romantic and emotionally charged scenes.
