In the books, Erik had made his wishes clear that he did not want a kid. We soon find out that Helen decided to ignore his wishes and lie to him that she was on birth control.
In the Netflix series, however, things turned out pretty differently for Helen. From the sophomore season itself, Helen is forthcoming about her desire to have a kid. But her failed relationships make the prospect difficult for her. Her first partner in the series Ryan had clearly revealed that he does not share Helen’s wish to become a parent. However, Helen does become pregnant but it ends in a tragedy when she suffers a miscarriage. Soon after, Helen and Ryan break up before she finds love again with Erik.
