Fans are worried for Zayn Malik‘s mental health as the British popstar cancels his performance in the United Kingdom on December 2, with fans suspecting he’s still handling the fallout from the death of Liam Payne.

Payne was found dead in Buenos Aires on October 16 after falling three stories from a hotel room after abusing substances, appearing to relapse into his own battles against depression and loneliness.

The new shocked the world, but particularly those of his One Direction bandmates, including Malik and Harry Styles, who all released emotional statements recognizing his passing and the talented voice that he was.

Over a month later, and hours before he was due to appear on stage, the 35-year-old cancelled his show to the disappointment of his fans before he later admitted he simply doesn’t have the voice to sing at the moment.

“I’m so sorry to do this,” Malik wrote via Instagram. “But my voice just isn’t there at all tonight and without it there’s no show. I’m truly sorry to let you down, especially at such short notice.

“I held onto hope until the very last moment. I’m hopeful with some rest tonight I’ll be back on stage tomorrow. My deepest apologies Newcastle. Love you all.”

Payne‘s ex-bandmates gathered for his funeral, along with countless other famous people and personalities, to mourn and say goodbye on November 20.

But it seems as though Malik is taking it particularly hard according to an insider speaking to RadarOnline.com.

“Liam’s passing hit Zayn hard,” the source said. “He’s been really struggling of late, it’s not been easy. Zayn is trying to manage his mental health as much as possible.

“Which means not pushing himself. And that sometimes means he has to put his well-being first, even if that upsets people.”

Can fans get a refund?

Malik previously performed in Payne’s birthplace of Wolverhampton, around 120 miles away from where he was buried, and planned to produce tributes to the star to honor him and his legacy.

But that wasn’t possible in North-East England on Tuesday, December 3. Some compensation for fans is that they will be able to claim refunds if they cannot attend any sort of replacement show, or simply don’t want to.

“We apologize for the late notice,” a tannoy announcement at Newcastle City Hall said. “It was his hope that he would be able to continue with the show. But this is no longer possible.

“Please contact your point of purchase for reschedule or refunds. If you have parents or guardians collecting you, please stay in the auditorium and wait to be collected.”
