Love. Treason. …Death? We declare a do-over. On Prime Video this month is a rollicking re-imagining of history: My Lady Jane, adapted from the 2016 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, co-authored by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows; now adapted for screen by co-showrunners Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn.

Allow them to re-introduce you to a historical damsel in distress: Lady Jane Grey, a Tudor noblewoman who (very suddenly) became the Queen of England in 1553 for a mere nine days before she was sentenced to a tragic beheading amidst a writhing political conspiracy. But forget all about that beheading part: In My Lady Jane, rising star Emily Bader’s titular Lady Jane shall hold her head high in this radical re-telling, steering the reins of her own fate—and with it, the fate of her kingdom. Opposite Bader on this comedy-ridden adventure is “subject-of-lust” Killing Eve actor Edward Bluemel as Lord Guildford Dudley, and actor Jordan Peters as King Edward. Deliciously antagonistic supporting talents include Mamma Mia’s Dominic Cooper in the role of Lord Seymour, Four Weddings and a Funeral’s Anna Chancellor as Lady Frances Grey, and The Trip’s Rob Brydon as Lord Dudley.

The irreverent leading lady proves her own heroine against the villains of the kingdom, allowing her cleverness, wit, and unshakable will forge a new way forward for England. Prepare thyself for a fantastical twist on history as we know it.

Who’s the team behind My Lady Jane?

Burgess and Glynn run the show together, with episodes directed by Only Murders in the Building’s Jamie Babbit and The Walking Dead’s Stefan Schwartz, production design by Bridgerton’s Will Hughes-Jones, and cinematography by Maja Zamojda (The Great, The Wheel of Time).

Will there be a season 2 of My Lady Jane?

My Lady Jane is based off the first novel in a series by Hand, Ashton, and Meadows, each book reimagining a different Jane or Mary throughout history. (These subjects include Calamity Jane; Mary Shelly; Jane Eyre; Mary, Queen of Scots; and Mary Read.) Because the story of Lady Jane Grey only takes up one book, it’s possible My Lady Jane will remain a one-season story—or the creators could turn it into an anthology series. Either way, Prime Video has yet to confirm a second season of the historical comedy.

That hasn’t prevented the cast from sharing their own ideas about what a season 2 (with the same characters!) might look like. As Bader shared with TV Insider, “If we went to another season, I think that Jane is on the run, and it’s time to fully commit to badass Jane Grey.” As if she wasn’t one already.
