With season 5 having been announced as the final season, fans can expect the season 4 finale to set the stage, and the stakes, for the final story arc of this series, which began in 2019.

While The Boys is an adaptation of Garth Ennis’s comic book of the same name, there have been enough deviations from the comics storyline and characters that many are anticipating a wholly fresh finale when the time for the endgame finally arrives.

What happened in the lead-up to The Boys season 4 finale?

The lead-up to The Boys season 4 finale has been a slow-burn storyline where many plot developments, from both the Boys, and the Seven have slowly converged towards a single major event.

Homelander, having decisively regained custody of his son, Ryan, has tried to mold him in his image, with mixed results. In season 4, episode 4, We’ll Keep The Red Flag Flying Here, Homelander showed his temperamental side by lashing out at Ryan for visiting Billy Butcher behind his back.

However, he also realized that acting out this way would only alienate his son and so he decided to come to terms with his own past in the follow-up episode Wisdom of the Ages, where he took his revenge on the lab scientists who raised him.

This made him a far better manipulator in “Beware the Jabberwock, my Son”, where he encouraged Ryan to give in to his brutality by convincing him that this could help him be a better hero.

However, in “The Insider”, the pendulum swung back in the other direction as Ryan openly rebelled against a Vought propaganda video Homelander had asked him to shoot, leaving it ambiguous as to how he’ll react to this.

The Boys have also been combatting Homelander and the Seven’s coup attempt against President Robert Singer.

They infiltrated a party of political donors hosted by Tek Knight in “Dirty Business” and got some important insights into Homelander’s larger plans, such as having Tek Knight leverage his private prisons as political internment camps. Tek Knight himself dies at the hands of his butler because of their interference.

They also spend most of “The Insider” tracking down the assassin Sage has hired to take out President Singer, only to be outwitted at every turn.

Not only did the shapeshifting assassin escape their efforts to apprehend them, the assassin also successfully captured aand disguised themselves as Starlight to infiltrate and burgle Hughie’s home, throwing the plans of the Boys in disarray.

However, the Seven are no longer a united front by the time of The Boys season 4 finale, with A-Train openly turning on Homelander after being a spy for The Boys throughout the season. Homelander and Sage have also had a falling out thanks to Sage not telling him that she knew A-Train was the leaker all along.

And finally, there’s the matter of Billy Butcher, and the V-enhanced tumor in his brain that’s pushing him to develop a virus that will kill all Supes, his own allies included. Billy, for his part, abhors the idea of genocide and only wants the virus to kill Homelander and Victoria Neuman. But can he win against the enemy within?

The Boys season 4 finale will be released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in all regions. The next season of the show will be the final season.
