Sweet Magnolias Season 4 was released on Netflix on February 6, 2025, and has gained steady ratings. However, fans were surprised to see Carson Rowland’s character Ty reduced screentime in the new season.
While Season 4 touched on major plotlines affecting Ty, such as his father Bill’s death, his presence was limited as compared to previous seasons. Sweet Magnolia’s creator Sheryl J. Anderson revealed that Ty’s reduced role was due to both scheduling conflicts and creative decisions. He went on to explain that Ty’s absence was majorly due to his character’s journey chasing musical dreams.
Tyler Ty Townsend or Ty is one of the main characters of Sweet Magnolias. The eldest child of Maddie and Bill and Katie and Kyle’s brother, Ty is a school heartthrob and a star of Serenity High’s baseball team. Among his other storylines which involved his baseball career and romantic life, he also deals with his parent’s separation in the first season.
Based on the book series by Sherryl Wood, the plot features the story of three female friends Maddie Towsend (Joanna Gracia), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley) in the small town of Serenity, South Carolina.
Why did Carson Rowland’s screen time reduce in Sweet Magnolias Season 4?
In an interview with Deadline, show creator Sheryl J. Anderson explained how Ty’s role was reduced due to a lack of schedule availability and a deliberate choice of the writer. Carson Rowland who plays Ty was reportedly busy with his other commitments that limited his availability for the series.
Rowland’s projects like The Queen’s Jewels an adventure film led by Katherine McNamara might have contributed to the scheduling clash. While the film was being shot in Florida, Sweet Magnolias was majorly filmed in Georgia in 2024.
In Sweet Magnolias, Ty makes an appearance during his father Bill’s funeral in the church, however, it is mostly as a secondary character. Anderson when asked about Ty’s reduced role explained why his character had limited screen time. She said,
“What we wanted to demonstrate is that he’s caught up in the dream of going on a tour as a musician and hasn’t fully thought out what the effect of being away from everybody he loves will be.”
Anderson explained how Ty is slowly detaching himself from Serenity and its people to pursue his career. She added,
“So we let him go off and have a great time with Olivia while everybody in Serenity is dealing with his absence.”
While this change led to less screen time, Ty’s relationship with Annie Sullivan (Anneliese Judge) was highlighted. Anderson remarked it as ‘inherent tragedy’ emphasizing this kind of young love is often idealized. She says
“When we fall in love fully for the first time, we truly believe that love conquers all, but it is a part of growing as individuals and growing as a couple to understand that a real relationship takes real work, so they have work ahead of them.”
Ty’s choice of career path is tweaked in the series as in Sherryl Wood’s books he focuses on his passion for baseball and even plays for the Atlanta Braves. However, the Netflix series shows how Ty gets a massive career opportunity in a music band going on a Europe tour.
Even though Ty’s role is reduced in Season 4 we might see him return as a regular main character in Sweet Magnolias Season 5.
This change of storyline makes it difficult for Ty and Annie who make their relationship official at the beginning of the series. Annie chooses to put a stop to their romance when she gets accepted into her dream Californian school while Ty asks her to join him on the Europe tour.
