For fans who can’t seem to get enough of The Walking Dead‘s universe, Netflix has a very big treat in store as two of the three spin-offs from the franchise will be available to stream in January in a bid to get rid of those winter blues. Based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, who also penned Invincible, Marvel Zombies and many others, The Walking Dead was a huge hit for AMC when it premiered in 2010. Amassing a loyal and dedicated fanbase in its wake, the post-apocalyptic show drew in more than 17 million viewers at its height, making it the biggest series debut AMC had seen to that point.
Even though it has been over 14 years since viewers witnessed Rick waking up in a hospital from a coma in a zombie-infested world, fans are still eager for more of its traumatic and survival-forced narratives. It’s fair to say that The Walking Dead began a somewhat downward spiral around its seventh season and a lot of that had to do with the show killing off some of its most beloved characters. The gory deaths of Glenn and Abraham were the beginning of a chain of endless suffering and a slower than usual story. Regardless, saying goodbye to the iconic show in November 2022 was a bittersweet departure for many fans but, thankfully, the arrival of some spin-offs seemed to take the sting out of its lackluster remaining seasons.
Two Walking Dead Spinoffs Are Heading To Netflix On January 13
According to Collider, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live and The Walking Dead: Dead City will be available to stream via Netflix on January 13. This is especially a great opportunity for those who didn’t get a chance to catch up on the spin-offs when they rolled around the first time or just a great excuse to rewatch them again. The Walking Dead: Dead City sees Lauren Cohan reprise her role as Maggie once again alongside Jeffery Dean Morgan as they reluctantly team up (since Negan did kill her boyfriend Glenn) to take on a zombie-packed New York City in a bid to rescue Maggie’s son from The Croat, a sadistic former member of the Saviors.
The other The Walking Dead spin-off headed for Netflix, The Ones Who Live, tells the story of Rick Grimes, who initially appeared to have died after that bridge explosion, but is actually alive and well, and Michonne Grimes, who heads off to find him. After a host of chaotic events and nail-biting situations, the couple reunite as viewers get to witness how deep their love for each other goes. Other recurring cast members for The Ones Who Live also include Pollyanna McIntosh, who slips back into her role as Jadis Stokes/Anne from The Walking Dead and World Beyond.
For those who will be catching up on The Walking Dead: Dead City when it hits Netflix in January and want to know what happens next, there’s some good news inbound. Season two of the series has landed a 2025 release window. Due to the popularity of the spin-off, another chapter of the series was officially greenlit with AMC’s Dan McDermott stating that he can’t “wait to bring Dead City fans back to the epicenter of Manhattan for more zip-lining action with Maggie and Negan.”
