All signs point to the fantasy epic getting renewed for Season 3 on Amazon Prime. Here’s everything you need to know.
It seems that the stars have aligned for a return to Middle-earth for Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. In October 2024, The Hollywood Reporter stated that the show was on the “verge of renewal.” With a passionate fanbase and Amazon’s significant investment in the series, a Season 3 renewal seemed all but certain—and it was. In early December 2024, it was reported that showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay were quoted as saying they’re “prepping” and “working on” the next season of the show.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was watched by 55 million viewers, and during the second week of the Season 2 release, it reached over a billion minutes of watch time. Despite the high cost of the show, it seems to be a money-maker for Amazon Studios.
As anticipation builds towards Season 3, fans are eager to see what epic tales and battles await in the next chapter of the epic adventure set in the world of J. R. R. Tolkien. Here’s everything to know.
Has The Rings of Power been renewed for Season 3?
It appears that it has. The show has not officially been announced for Season 3 by Amazon Studios. However, Amazon promoted the show to buyers at its Prime Video UK Upfront (a conference designed to attract advertisers to promote on the Amazon Prime Platform) in October, suggesting that it will be renewed. And earlier reports from September 2024 indicated that Amazon was supporting a five-year plan for the series.
Additionally, show-runners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay disclosed in December 2024 that they were “working on” the next season, and they had already been signed onto multi-year deals with Amazon Studios for the project and had assembled the writers’ room to begin crafting the story for Season 3.

How to watch The Rings of Power
The first two seasons of the show are available to watch on Amazon Prime.
What is going to happen in The Rings of Power Season 3?
While we do not know for sure what will happen in Season 3, we can make some informed assumptions. With the help of master elven-smith Celembrimbor, Sauron has created many of the rings needed to rule over Middle-earth. The rings that have been crafted so far include three rings for the Elven-kings, seven rings for the Dwarf-lords, and nine rings for mortal men. The ring we have yet to see is the One Ring to “rule them all.”
Given Sauron’s growing power, it’s likely that Season 3 will focus on the forging of the One Ring and his subsequent efforts to manipulate the other ring-bearers in order to exert his control over Middle-earth. Combining Sauron’s crafting of the One Ring may bring together the storylines in the show pertaining to The Stranger’s reveal as Gandalf, Numenor’s role in the larger story, and Prince Durin’s rise to rule Khazad-Dum.
Is there a trailer for The Rings of Power Season 3?
Not yet. The showrunners are currently preparing for Season 3 and “working on” the show, but nothing has been filmed and therefore no trailers are available yet.
