The Boys’ Homelander Actor Discusses Why Ending the Series with Season 5 is Ideal

The Boys is partway through its penultimate season, and it’s all leading up to what will be one last hurrah for the show. Ahead of Season 4’s premiere, it was announced that The Boys would be brought to its conclusion with Season 5.

A recent edition of the Happy Sad Confused podcast brought together several of the stars of The Boys for an interview, and the group addressed the end of the show. Homelander actor Antony Starr said that it wasn’t a surprise when the Season 5 news was announced, referring to how five seasons was the original game plan that showrunner Eric Kripke had for the show. He also commented on how awful it is to be part of a TV series that overstays its welcome, and ending The Boys with Season 5 will hopefully allow the show to instead go out on a high note.

“[Kripke] started the show saying that this was always in his head to go five seasons,” Starr said. “And, of course, I don’t know about you guys, but I was sitting there going, ‘Pff, we’ll see. Oh, we shall see. It might only go two.’ But, no, the show has done well.”

“I think everyone wants to go out on a strong note.”

The actor continued, “I think everyone wants to go out on a strong note, and I think there’s nothing worse — and I’ve been involved in a show that did this, it was fucking horrible — you do that last season and it’s shit. And you get remembered very poorly and you’ve got to to kind of wear that. I like to think that we will go out on a really strong note and I think we all deserve it.”

It remains to be seen how the story is wrapped up. However, Mother’s Milk actor Laz Alonso has an idea. He wants to see The Boys get a feature film following Season 5 to truly conclude the story. It doesn’t seem likely that will end up happening, however, as Alonso noted his pushing for that to happen hasn’t been a success so far.

Laz Alonso Wants a Feature Film to Conclude The Boys

“I have been unsuccessfully pitching that we end the show with a feature film to Eric [Kripke]. Like, make the last episode of Season 5 a cliffhanger, then announce the film that we’ve been filming since the beginning of the series, pretty much. But [Kripke] always somehow gets out of that one.”

The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.
