Outer Banks season four’s first five episodes have landed with a midseason finale that no one was expecting

Outer Banks is back on Netflix but what happened at the end of episode five?

The adventurous teen drama has returned with just the first five episodes coming out on the streamer after more than a year’s wait.

While it’s going to be another month until the remaining episodes are dropped on Netflix, there is plenty for fans to mull over in the meantime and particularly the final few minutes of the midseason finale.

JJ’s real parents revealed

Near the end of episode five, JJ (played by Rudy Pankow) tracks down his dad Luke (Gary Weeks) who is staying with Barracuda Mike (Justin Matthew-Smith) but they need to make a quick getaway as Sheriff Shoupe (Callum Moss) shows up.

The pair go to the lighthouse and it is here that Luke makes a confession that no one was expecting.

He tells JJ that he isn’t actually his real dad and his mum isn’t his biological mother either.

Luke confesses that his actual parents are the late Larissa Genrette and Chandler Groff (J Anthony Crane) which means that JJ is actually a born Kook.

He explains that Larissa wanted to keep JJ safe and so gave him to Luke who then went on to abuse him for years but why did she feel the need to do so?

Fans are expected to find out a lot more about the youngster’s early life when the drama returns for part two on Thursday, November 7.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Pogues find a clue which points them in the direction of a crypt “where living and dead collide”.

During their exploration, the gang split up and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) and Pope (Jonathan Daviss) find the crypt but accidentally lock themselves in.

The pair then have to hide as Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) and the Captain (Terence Rosemore) make their way into the crypt too as they find a scroll in the coffin of one of Blackbeard’s closest allies.

The Pogues try to follow them up the ladder but lock the door before they’re able to escape and, to make matters worse, it starts raining and the crypt fills with water.

With the pair now trapped and on the brink of drowning, how will their friends help get them out?
