An update on The Witcher has revealed more about the production timeline for season 4. The Netflix show is based on the fantasy novel series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, which has also been adapted into a popular series of video games. Although the main character Geralt of Rivia was originally played by Henry Cavill, the role will be taken over by Liam Hemsworth in the upcoming The Witcher season 4, which is set to be the series’ penultimate season.
ET recently shared a video from an interview with Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern that was conducted on the red carpet for the premiere of the Netflix movie Lonely Planet, in which they co-star. When asked about The Witcher, Hemsworth revealed that he had “three more weeks of shooting.” He also shared effusive praise for the “amazing” cast and crew and said it was “super fun” to get to play a character from video games that he used to love as a kid. Read the star’s full quote below:
I’ve got three more weeks of shooting. I’ve been in the UK since the end of January and I’m really excited about it. It’s been a really fun shoot. Everyone on the cast and crew has been amazing. I was a big fan of the video game a long time ago and to come play this character is super fun.
What Liam Hemsworth’s Comments Mean For The Witcher Season 4
The Season’s Wrap Date Can Help Predict Its Premiere Date
Custom image by Brennan KleinWhile Liam Hemsworth wrapping filming does not necessarily mean that the entire Witcher cast will also be wrapped in three weeks, his comments do seem to indicate that principal photography on the new season is winding down. Because he is playing the series’ lead character, it seems likely that production on the entire season will soon be coming to a close around the same time that he is finished filming his role. As a result, knowing the rough wrap date can allow the premiere date for the season to be estimated based on past precedent.
Season
Wrap Date
Premiere Date
Season 1
May 2019
December 20, 2019
Season 2
April 2, 2021
December 17, 2021
Season 3
September 2022
Part 1: June 29, 2023, Part 2: July 27, 2023
The precedent of the past three seasons shows that seasons of The Witcher typically premiere between seven and nine months after principal photography wraps. Presuming that the entire production wraps at around the time Hemsworth estimates, this could mean that season 4 may premiere on Netflix some time between June and August 2025. This would slot in well after the release of the animated spinoff movie The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, which is set to premiere in February 2025, giving both releases some room to breathe.
Our Take On The Witcher Season 4 Production Update
Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt Is Hitting Screens Soon
Even if The Witcher season 4 premieres slightly later than that estimated window, this production update indicates that the new season is coming soon. This news comes almost exactly two years after the announcement of Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt. It remains to be seen if he is accepted by general audiences as a replacement for Cavill, but the wait to discover how his performance measures up is getting significantly shorter.
