Marvel’s Latest Move Leaves MCU Fans Shaken—Their Worst Fear Is Coming True

A new update may have outright confirmed that Agatha All Along will remain a limited series.

Marvel Studios fans have been asking one question over the past few months: Will Agatha All Along get a second season? It’s a question that we once thought we didn’t have to ask, for the Disney Plus show was set to be a standalone miniseries like so many of its counterparts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s small screen arm, but ever since the WandaVision spinoff wrapped up its season, speculation has run wild suggesting that the studio is planning on greenlighting a second season.

It isn’t hard to see why either. Agatha was a resounding success for Marvel Television on a relatively low budget compared to other MCU projects and it was a critical darling, earning acclaim from fans and critics for its witty writing, exceptional performances, and unexpected twists. It also received praise for simply operating like a great TV show in a day and age when so many streaming shows attempt to be multi-part movies.

Although things are looking positive for Agatha All Along‘s future, a more recent update suggests that the studio may actually be sticking to its original plan of keeping it as a miniseries.

Agatha All Along earns a Limited Series nomination, raising questions about its future

Agatha All Along has been nominated for Best Limited Series at the Art Directors Guild Awards. A huge, well-deserved honor for the Marvel series no doubt, but it does raise some questions about the show’s future as “limited series” implies that it won’t return for a second season. This is a sharp contrast to the rest of the awards circuit, particularly the Golden Globes, in which Marvel submitted the show in the Comedy or Musical TV Show category instead of the Limited Series category. Needless to say, this potential plot twist has left fans concerned about the show’s future now.

Of course, there are some silver linings to take into account. As surprising as it was to see Agatha submitted in the television categories at the Golden Globes, Marvel likely would have had to prove that there were plans to directly carry on the story at some point in avoid the show landing in the Limited Series line-up. However, the nominations for the Art Directors Guild Awards had to be submitted prior to the end of Agatha All Along‘s run – meaning before the season 2 rumors surfaced. If the other major award submissions were made by Marvel after that, then there is nothing to worry about on that front. Well, nothing new to worry about on that front.

If the Limited Series nomination does suggest that the show won’t return for a second season, there is another silver lining: It can still return in a new format. For all of the reports that there have been recently claiming that Marvel is planning on renewing Agatha All Along for season 2, there have also been reports claiming that it intends on continuing the story in a Wiccan spinoff instead (focused on Joe Locke’s Agatha character Billy Maximoff).

But insider Alex Perez says that those projects are one and the same, stating that Marvel’s intention is to continue the story of Agatha All Along in a new spinoff series based on Billy and Agatha’s journey to finding the former’s brother, Tommy Maximoff – who was seemingly reincarnated in the penultimate episode of Agatha by Billy (with some help from Agatha).

The show’s finale saw Agatha herself become a ghost after sacrificing herself to save Billy. She then decided that she would stick around by his side and help him find his brother, allowing the pair to continue to develop the odd bond that was growing between them.

Taking all of that into account, Marvel’s submission of Agatha All Along for Limited Series at the Art Director’s Guild Awards might suggest that the show will indeed be one of the many one-and-done miniseries in the MCU, but its Golden Globe nomination should cancel those worries out. Even so, if the studio doesn’t change its original plans for the show’s future, the story will likely continue in the form of another series anyway – a spiritual second season, if you will.
