Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘Cheap’ $25K Ruby Ring for Priscilla Chan Sparks Outrage—What Happened to the 3-Month Rule?

It doesn’t hold a blinding diamond but Priscilla Chan has proudly showed off her ‘very simple’ wedding ring anyway.

The 27-year-old wife of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 28, flashed her ruby wedding ring during a lunch date in Palo Alto, California today.

Several jewellers were reluctant to suggest a value, given the poor photo quality, but despite its simple design, one expert has suggested that $25,000 would be a ‘safe estimate’.

Tristan Cole told MailOnline that ‘the ruby could go for ‘$8-10,000 alone’; what might be side diamonds in the blurry shot would further increase the value.

As Mrs Zuckerberg was photographed in the city she resides in, it seems the couple are yet to embark on a honeymoon – or, if they did, it too was rather simple.

Mr Zuckerberg, who married his girlfriend of nine years in his backyard last Saturday, designed the ring himself and showed it to his wife for the first time when he presented it to her at their wedding.

Up until now, the only information he had provided about the design was that it was a ‘very simple ruby’.

But while the stone is widely considered to be less valuable than a large diamond, Mr Zuckerberg may have selected a ruby due to its cultural significance.

Although it is commonly known for representing passion and love, the precious stone is also considered to be a sign of wisdom.

It is said to be held in high esteem within Asian countries especially. The stones were once used to decorate the armor and harnesses of Indian and Chinese noblemen.

Rubies are even said to be laid beneath the foundations of buildings in Asia to help bring good fortune to a structure.

Mr Zuckerberg’s new wife is American-Chinese.

A 32.08-carat Burmese ruby and diamond ring by Chaumet sold for $6.7million through Christie’s auction house last week.

It set a new world record price for any ruby that has been sold.

Several rubies were also included in Elizabeth Taylor’s jewellery collection. A 8.24-carat ring set was sold for over $4.2million in total.

Mrs Zuckerberg was presented the ring after she was walked down the aisle by Beast, the couple’s Hungarian sheepdog.

According to an anonymous friend that talked to People magazine, the couple of nine years wrote their own vows and ‘couldn’t stop grinning’ throughout the ‘low-key’ ceremony.

Beast, the dog, even has its own Facebook page – naturally.

The couple’s less than 100 guests snacked on Mexican and Japanese food from the couple’s favourite local restaurants; Palo Alto Sol and Fuki Sushi.

The Mexican meals were valued at a modest $7.50 each.

Dessert was a selection of mice-shaped chocolate from Burdick Chocolate priced at just over $3 each.

It was a sweet the couple had eaten on their first date.

The couple had spent more than seven months planning the wedding but had not publicly revealed they were engaged.
