Virgin River season 6 made a subtle change in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but it did not go unnoticed by a lot of fans.
Virgin River has returned to Netflix and the latest season saw Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) finally tie the knot. Of course, the wedding did not go down without some drama and there were plenty of hiccups along the way.
In the background, Charmaine Roberts (Lauren Hammersley) was having trouble with the father of her twins, Calvin, as he had been demanding more time with them. Brie Sheridan (Zibby Allen) was in the process of helping to get a restraining order against him.
When Calvin found out Jack and his family had been helping Charmaine keep Calvin away, he paid Jack a visit late at night and threatened him. Calvin only featured in the season for a couple of minutes, but even with his face slightly obscured in the pouring rain, viewers noticed he was portrayed by a different actor.
The role was taken over by Josh Blacker, known for starring in Elysium and The Wall. The character used to be played by David Cubitt up until that point.
Viewers were not a fan of the change, with loose-garlic-3461 saying on Reddit: “Anyone else bummed out that Calvin’s actor changed in season 6? I felt like the previous actor portrayed him perfectly.”

Josh Blacker now plays Calvin
K_Click_D agreed: “Yep. This new fella just isn’t the same, he’s not threatening and intimidating enough. This was a disappointing point of season 6. I hope the original actor returns for S7.”
Mean_Swimming_4414 added: “Yes, annoyed they changed him.” Netflix did not mention anything about the casting change prior to or after the season’s release.
It took fans having to deep dive into IMDb profiles to discover the new actor. ConversationTop1408 shared: “I’m disappointed, I like the original actor. I’m only on episode 3 at the court house where we see him for the 1st time. I was like wait .. this is not right..”
Wharevahappenedthere concluded: “Loved the original Calvin. Not sure why David Cubbit didn’t return but he was awesome. The new guy might turn out to be alright but we’ll need to see more of him.”

Tim Matheson as Doc Mullins and Lauren Hammersley as Charmaine
There is still no official reason as to why David Cubitt left the series, buth is IMDb account confirms 2023 marked the end of his stint on the show.
He has since gone on to star in Allegiance, Billy the Kid and The Madness, and has two upcoming projects – Field Sketches and Alone Together.
With this in mind, it could be that the star was unable to commit to another season of Virgin River due to scheduling issues.
