Liam Payne’s family and friends have raised a staggering amount of money for a children’s cancer charity following his shock death last year.

It has been revealed that the One Direction star’s kind-hearted family and friends raised an incredible £31,303 for Great Ormond Street Hospital after attending his funeral in November.

And fans also donated a further £1,808 through online donations in Liam’s name.

The money will go towards building a new children’s cancer unit at the hospital in London.

A source told The Sun: ‘Everyone is still coming to terms with the tragic loss of Liam, but there is some comfort in knowing the legacy he leaves behind.

‘Everyone dug deep at the service and the amount raised is staggering — it will help change lives.

‘Aside from his love of music, Liam was passionate about helping others, especially children, due to his love of being a father to little Bear.’

Liz Tait, the director of fund-raising at Great Ormond Street Hospital, told Bizarre: ‘We’re extremely touched and grateful for all the donations in memory of Liam, which will go towards building a brand new children’s cancer centre at Great Ormond Street.

‘Our thoughts and sincere condolences continue to go out to Liam’s family and friends.’

Liam’s funeral took place in November at a village church in Amersham, Bucks and was attended by his ex-partner and mother of his son, Cheryl Tweedy.

His four One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan were also in attendance as well as Simon Cowell, James Corden and Marvin and Rochelle Humes.

On the back of the order of service, a message read: ‘Thank you for attending the service and thank you for all the kind messages received.

‘Liam would like you to make a donation. In memory of Liam, we’d like you to consider Great Ormond Street Hospital.’

It comes after One Direction re-released their 2013 documentary This Is Us in cinemas for one night only last Tuesday, with the band donating the proceeds to charities in honour of the late Liam.

It comes after Payne’s cause of death was at a UK inquest, three months after he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina after a drink-drug binge on October 16 (pictured in March 2024)

Niall, Zayn, Louis and Harry were left devastated when their bandmate and friend fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Argentina on October 16.

The doc, which followed the band on tour, was shown in Odeon cinemas with all ticket sales going to mental health charities MIND, SAMH and AWARE NI in Payne’s honour.

The late singer was candid about his mental health struggles and substance abuse issues, admitting to having ‘severe suicidal thoughts’ and a heavy drug use during his time in the chart topping band.

Announcing the news on Instagram, Odeon wrote:  ‘By popular demand, and in tribute to the late Liam Payne, we’re bringing One Direction: This is Us back to the big screen January 14’.

‘We’ll be donating all ticket profits from this screening to the mental health awareness charities MIND, SAMH and AWARE NI’.

The film was first released in 2013 and directed by Morgan Spurlock, who lost his battle with cancer last year aged 53, and was a huge success grossing a whopping $68 million worldwide.

Odeon described the film as: ‘An intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon. ‘Hear it from the boys themselves and see through their own eyes what it’s really like to be One Direction. ODEON will be donating 100% of all our ticket profits from each ticket sold from this screening to the mental health awareness charities MIND (in England and Wales) SAMH (in Scotland) and AWARE NI (in Northern Ireland) with 89% of the final total going to MIND, 10% to SAMH and 1% to AWARE NI.

It comes after Payne’s  cause of death was at a UK inquest, three months after he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He was staying at the Casa Sur hotel in south America when he fell to his death after a drink-drug binge on October 16.

Fans across the world were stunned by his sudden death and an outpouring of grief culminated in a touching funeral attended by musical royalty and all of Payne’s former bandmates.

His medical cause of death has now been announced to be ‘polytrauma’, a term which means a person has multiple traumatic injuries to their body.

A hearing, which Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court said was held on December 17, was told it may take ‘some time’ to ascertain exactly how the 31-year-old died.

Five people have been charged over Payne’s death in Argentina after he fell from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel.

The hotel’s manager, a receptionist and a friend of Payne have been charged with manslaughter, Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office previously said in a statement.

They are reported to be hotel manager Gilda Martin, receptionist Esteban Grassi and Payne’s friend Roger Nores. Two other people have been charged over the supply of drugs.

Nores is accused of manslaughter for having allegedly ‘abandoned him to his luck knowing that he was incapable of fending for himself and knowing that he [Liam] suffered from multiple addictions’, court documents show.

Two others, hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra and waiter Braian Paiz, have been charged with supplying cocaine.

The inquest into Payne’s death in the UK has been adjourned until a pre-inquest review on November 6, the coroner’s court said.

His medical cause of death was confirmed by Dr Roberto Victor Cohen as ‘polytrauma’, meaning multiple traumatic injuries.

The hearing was also told Payne, who was described as a ‘singer and entertainer’ during the hearing, was formally identified ‘with the assistance of the funeral directors in Buckinghamshire.’

Payne was one of five members of hit boyband One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan.

The band were formed on Simon Cowell’s The X Factor before becoming an international sensation.

They split in 2016 after Zayn decided to leave the band.

Payne struggled with drink and drugs after the split, but successfully became sober at a rehab clinic in 2023.

However by the night of his death he had relapsed and consumed alcohol and drugs, reports suggest.

He was seen hanging around the hotel lobby, smashing up his laptop and introducing himself to fans in the hours before his death.

He was eventually taken up to his hotel room by three people but is thought to have accidentally fallen after becoming unconscious.
