How Rings of Power Season 2 Casts a New, Heartbreaking Light on Elrond in LOTR

Elrond (Robert Aramayo) is in shock upon learning that Durin's army will not support them in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 7

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 makes an Elrond scene from the movies even more tragic. Played by Robert Aramayo, the younger Elrond is one of the most important Rings of Power characters. His relationships with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Durin IV (Owain Arthrur) have been at the heart of the series. Elrond has done his best to balance his friendship with Durin against the larger issues that the Elves and the Dwarves face.

In season 2, Elrond’s friendship with Galadriel is tested by their opposing views on whether the rings of power should be used. By Rings of Power season 2’s ending, Elrond’s viewpoint on the rings of power changes given the actions of Galadriel and the changes that have occurred across Middle-earth. Despite having a different outlook heading into Rings of Power season 3, Elrond’s resistance to the rings makes a scene from the movies sadder.

Elrond’s Rings Of Power Season 2 Story Makes His Mount Doom Flashback Sadder

It Is Not The First Time He Has Failed To Stop His Allies From Embracing The Rings

Elrond covered in ash in Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring.

Elrond’s Mount Doom flashback in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is more devastating given his Rings of Power season 2 story. Rings of Power shows that he has been warning others of the rings’ dangers for years, and yet, his allies continue to use the rings anyway. He fails to prevent Galadriel, King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker), and the Elves from using the rings, even though he does see the value of them by the end of the season.

In the flashback scene with an older Elrond (Hugo Weaving) in Fellowship of the Ring, Elrond also fails to convince Isildur (Harry Sinclair) to cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom. Isildur instead keeps the One Ring and walks away with it, allowing Sauron to endure when he should have been defeated. Rings of Power shows that even before that fateful day inside Mount Doom, Elrond failed many thousands of years earlier to stop the rings from being used.

The Rings Of Power Season 3 Can Add Another Tragic Layer To This LOTR Moment

It Could Create A Close Bond Between Elrond And Isildur

Rings of Power season 3 can make the Mount Doom flashback even more tragic by showing Elrond and young Isildur (Maxim Baldry) bonding and becoming friends and allies. While both Elrond and Isildur are committed to fighting the evil forces in Middle-earth, their storylines have remained separate. That could change in season 3 with their storylines colliding and forcing them to work together, much like Isildur and Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) being closely connected in season 2 after having separate storylines in season 1.

The One Ring’s hold over Isildur proves to be too strong, causing him to choose it over his friend’s wisdom and love.

If this happens, Elrond is not just pleading with an ally to cast the One Ring into the fire. He is pleading with an old friend, and despite the power of their bond potentially shown in Rings of Power season 3, the One Ring’s hold over Isildur proves to be too strong, causing him to choose it over his friend’s wisdom and love. This would add more weight to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and to the iconic Elrond and Isildur flashback in Fellowship of the Ring.
