House of the Dragon Season 2 Showdown: HBO Responds to George R.R. Martin’s Scathing Critique!

George R.R. Martin, author of the novels on which HBO bases itself to make shows like ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of the Dragon’, isn’t happy.

The Dance of Dragons has descended on season 2 of ‘House of the Dragon’, one of the biggest series on HBO and a spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’. However, an unexpected voice has joined the criticism from viewers – the final episode is the lowest rated of the production – that of the author of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ himself, as well as co-creator of the series. George R.R. Martin.

The writer published an entry on his blog that harshly criticized the future of the production, although he had to delete it shortly after. In an interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys —the head of content for HBO and the Max platform— has referred to this issue and questioned whether these new episodes will be divisive for viewers.

“Well, I’m not sure that the fans were divided over Season 2,” began Bloys. When asked about George R.R. Martin in particular, Bloys said: “Yes, maybe one fan was. But no, the show did really, really well. I expect that will be in competition. I have high hopes for Penguin and Colin [Farrell] and Cristin [Milioti]. We’ve got White Lotus coming back, we’ve got Last of Us coming back, we’ve got Emmy winner Hacks coming back. So I’m looking forward to next year.”

What about ‘The Winds of Winter’?

George R.R. Martin has admitted that he’s gone through a long season of stress, so he has barely written a few pages of ‘Winds of Winter’, the long-awaited sixth novel in the saga. According to the author, television projects have eaten up his time, so he has not been able to add many additional pages to the sequel to ‘Fire and Blood’. Regarding the series, Martin has revealed that “some of it was enjoyable (‘Dark Winds’ and ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’), but most of it was not.”

The writer and screenwriter compared the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’ with the film ‘The Butterfly Effect’ and assured that “changes beget more changes”. In his opinion, eliminating the character of Maelor (son of Aegon II and Helaena Targaryen) will have a negative impact on the remaining seasons of the series.

The third season is already confirmed, although filming is expected to begin early next year, so it is unlikely to come out before 2026. The next spin-off to see the light will be ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, whose filming has just concluded.
