The following contains major spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 8, “Shadow and Flame,” now streaming on Prime Video.
Actor Charles Edwards is opening up about the Season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in a new behind-the-scenes video. Per GamesRadar+, the clip posted by the official Rings of Power X account, shows Edwards, who played the Elven smith Celebrimbor, being applauded by the cast and crew of the Amazon Prime Video show as his time on the series came to an end.
An off-camera voice can be heard saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, that is a series release on Mr. Charles Edwards. Thank you very, very much.” The Celebrimbor actor, still dressed in his Elven clothing, addresses the group on-set, saying, “I’ve been very lucky in having Charlie Vickers (Sauron/Annatar) as a scene partner for most of it. And we’ve had a wonderful, wonderful time. And thank you. Bye.”
Episode 8 of The Rings of Powers howed Sauron brutally killing Celebrimbor after pummeling him with arrows. In some of Celebrimbor’s final words to the Dark Lord, he refers to the Rings Sauron covets so much, saying one in the end will prove to be his downfall. “You are their prisoner, Sauron. Lord of the Rings.” Sauron is then shown tearing up at those words.
Celebrimbor is also seen once more during Sauron’s battle with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) as he shape-shifts into the Elven smith at one point.
Edwards Says Filming Was “Truly Wonderful”
In the sit-down portion of the video posted by Amazon, Edwards said the finale was “heartbreaking for me, genuinely, because we had a truly wonderful time, the two of us, last summer doing this together. Vickers agreed, saying, “It was…kind of the season was the two of us in a room, one set, talking.”
Edwards added that shooting the series in order was also a plus, “The luxury, also was shooting in order, which is, as you know, almost unheard of. It was really rewarding.” Vickers added, “It was a real joy as an actor. Sauron still needs Celebrimbor because he doesn’t have the Rings. You know where they are.” Edward responded, “I sure do.”
“But, you have goaded me so much that he can’t resist, and I think it’s anger and frustration, and also probably a bit of sadness and despair at losing someone that has become a close confidant and ally in this Ring-making process,” Vickers said.
“And, let’s not forget, there’s also another Ring that he’s still got to make. And maybe he could have done with a bit of help with that Ring,” Vickers added, referring to the “One Ring.”
The Elven Smith’s Death Made Sauron Cry
In a previous interview, Vickers talked about Celebrimbor’s death scene and why it brought Sauron to tears. “It’s not like it was a planned thing. It just happened. And then when you talk about it, you have to go back and try and unpack why, and sometimes there is no explanation for these things,” Vickers said.
He added that in the end, Celebrimbor was someone Sauron respected. “I think you see him kill people in this show, and he often kills them quite matter-of-factly, lets say,” Vickers said. “It’s different with Celebrimbor because he has been a partner in crime and someone (Sauron) really respects and someone he could have used,” he added.
Season 3 of The Rings of Power has yet to be officially green-lit, but Vickers has some ideas for his character as the series continues. “Yeah, I think people are really hopeful. I know some things I can’t say, but I think there will be something formal coming at some point. But, I don’t even know when,” he said.
As for the continuation of Sauron’s story, Vickers said, “…As a fan and someone involved in the show, there are things that I would love to see if we get the chance to do them. The War of the Elves and Sauron. the Fall of Númenor, the War of the Last Alliance, all these things. The forging of the actual ring, what all these amazing novels are born out of.”
Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Prime Video.
