Glamour, Grace, and Princess Diana’s Legacy: The Spencer Sisters Rule Tatler’s March 2025 Cover!

After their headline-making appearance at their cousin Prince William’s Centrepoint Awards in London, sisters Kitty, Amelia and Eliza talk about the causes (and clothes) close to their hearts in Tatler’s March 2025 cover story

Dressed in Balenciaga, Lady Kitty Spencer and her twin sisters Lady Eliza and Amelia Spencer are the cover stars of Tatler’s March 2025 issue

A few hours before the Spencer sisters arrive to pose for their first joint magazine cover, they are luminous on the red carpet at the British Fashion Awards; dazzling with old-school aplomb and new-world glow, scions of the British aristocracy raised in the South African sun. Kitty is splendid in strapless gold, and the twins’ black off-the-shoulder dresses are inevitably (and globally) compared to their aunt Princess Diana’s ‘revenge’ dress. The trio eclipse all the other guests with their blonde elegance and can-do attitude – they are bougie bombshells with an irresistible back story. A few weeks before, they attended an awards ceremony for Centrepoint, the homeless charity, all in silvery blue. (The twins in satin and Kitty in a Dolce & Gabbana dress depicting a Venetian scene, complete with gondola on the skirt.) Kitty is an ambassador for the charity alongside its patron, her cousin Prince William. Indeed, all three are now a powerful triumvirate on the London scene, a fashion marketeer’s photogenic dream with a slice of Hollywood golden age, royal-adjacent poise and an equally pleasing side order of don’t-mess energy. Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, Cartier polo, the Chelsea Flower Show, fashion weeks in London and Milan, films, launches, dinners and fundraisers are all now incomplete without a dose of Spencer glamour.

Millers, Mitfords, Langhornes, Bouviers: there is nothing like a set of society sisters and their sartorial and suitor choices to set off flashbulbs, gossip columns and, these days, fashion brands, too. In the 1990s, duty-free magnate Robert Miller’s three daughters, Pia, Marie-Chantal and Alex, became respectively a Getty, a princess of Greece and a von Fürstenberg – the first and last passingly, but still. Not since then has there been such a spectacular sisterly collective.

Eliza and Amelia are doting aunts to their young niece. ‘She’s very similar to the twins,’ says Kitty. ‘I don’t think she thinks there’s an age gap’. From left, Eliza wears an OSCAR DE LA RENTA dress. Amelia wears an ILONA dress while Kitty wears a COPERNI dress

All three are now signed to Storm Model Management – their protective agent hovers close by – and are living mostly in London. They have their mother’s huge, vulnerable eyes and fine bone structure, and the Spencer fair, champagne colouring; they are funny, frank and charming; and most noticeably of all, there is a touchingly iron-strong sisterly bond between the platinum blondes. They are very close, with Kitty, 34, the ‘calm, feminine’ (according to Eliza), grown-up one, and the twins, 32, more tomboyishly active, finishing each other’s sentences. They also have
a younger brother, Louis, now 30, who went to Edinburgh University and will inherit Althorp. He is now a professional actor under the name Louis Lyons.

As English as they are by birth, they have been nurtured by the South African ecosystem, raised in the lush winelands of Constantia, Cape Town, in tennis-and-pool breezy style, with forest hikes, camping trips and education at Reddam House, a mixed private day school in the suburb. Their parents – Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl, and his first wife, model Victoria Lockwood – moved there in 1995 when Kitty was four and the twins were two or three. By 1997, their parents were divorced, their mother battling drink, drugs and anorexia. Victoria then trained as a counsellor, remarried, had the sisters’ beloved ‘baby brother’ Samuel, now 21, and later nightmarishly divorced her second husband, the businessman and former model Jonathan Aitken. You’d have to be allergic to news to have missed what happened next to their father, a distinguished historian. After two subsequent marriages – to Oxford friend Caroline ‘Pidge’ Freud (divorced from Matthew) and Canadian Karen Gordon – and three more children (Ned and Lara with Caroline, Charlotte with Karen), he has, after writing a bestselling memoir about his abuse at prep school, settled, if that is the right word, with the archaeologist and co-host of his podcast The Rabbit Hole Detectives, Dr Cat Jarman. This turned spectacularly messy, with a lawsuit running at the time of going to press. (Jarman has accused Karen of breaching her medical privacy by discussing her MS diagnosis. The countess denies any liability, reportedly claiming that any reference to Jarman’s condition ‘was entirely legitimate and justified’.) Perhaps Jarman, a 42-year-old Norwegian, will finally be the one to tame Spencer, given her expertise in Viking impulsivity.

The previous generation of Spencers was equally dramatic. The girls’ grandmother Frances ran off with wallpaper heir Peter Shand Kydd; their grandfather remarried and after he died, Charles, with Diana’s help, memorably threw their stepmother Raine Spencer’s belongings in black bin bags down the stairs at Althorp, the Palladian family seat (with Tudor origins) set in 13,000 acres of Northamptonshire.

Now a mother to nearly two-year-old Athena, Kitty has reassessed her approach to her work and social life. ‘I’m much more selective because it’s not really free time any more’. Understandably, the girls seem determined to be independent from all this. And anyway, in front of me are three poised, polished, philanthropic young women.

While their mother brought them up in South Africa, they returned for holidays with their father at Althorp. Kitty read psychology, politics and English at the University of Cape Town, spent a year in Florence studying Italian and history of art, and later moved to London to study luxury brand management at Regent’s University London. While working for a charity, she met fashion tycoon Michael Lewis (chair of The Foschini Group, which owns Whistles, Hobbs, Phase Eight and White Stuff, among others – media reports say he is worth around £80 million), now 65, and married him in July 2021. Of the twins, Amelia was a wedding planner in South Africa after studying corporate communications at the University of Cape Town, where she met personal trainer Greg Mallett – they married in South Africa in March 2023. Eliza, ‘older by one minute’, graduated cum laude in psychology and criminology from Cape Town and considered going into interior design before joining her sisters in London.

Here, Kitty and her husband live in Marylebone with their nearly two-year-old daughter, Athena, and the twins 15 minutes away from each other in Fulham, Amelia with Greg and Eliza with her long-standing entrepreneur boyfriend, Channing Millerd. Kitty also spends five months of the year in France, at their house near Èze on the Riviera; as a fan of Hollywood autobiographies, she particularly enjoys that ‘David Niven lived near our house in France – we do a Niven walk twice a week when we are there’.

The twins discovered through a 23andMe genetic test that they were in fact identical, contrary to what their parents had been told. ‘We always knew’, both say. The twins discovered last August through a 23andMe genetic test that – contrary to what their parents had been told – they are identical. ‘We always knew,’ say both, and it is very hard to tell them apart, although their manner is a little different (Amelia is more outspoken). They share taste and apparently, says Amelia, ‘80 per cent of their brainwaves’. Although when it comes to social media – they are all on Instagram – both Kitty and Eliza turn to Amelia for advice. Eliza (according to Amelia) is a perfectionist who procrastinates over captions, whereas Amelia just does it. ‘Everyone is putting up Christmas trees and I still haven’t done pictures from summer,’ says an equally procrastinatory Kitty.

Kitty blazed the fashion trail and indeed the philanthropic one. Her first cover was Tatler in April 2009, at 18. In 2021, after a long relationship with the brand, she became an ambassador for Dolce & Gabbana, which suits both her taste (‘overdressed!’) and her love of Italy. Of the house’s spectacles, she says, ‘Their Lake Como [Alta Moda] one in 2018 was the most incredible… The night before, they had welcome drinks and Domenico said, “Get some sleep, because you’re opening the show.” [Italy] is definitely my happiest place in the world.’

Motherhood, however, has made her reassess her attitude to her work and social life: ‘I do a lot less than I did now that I’ve got my little girl… I’m much more selective because it’s not really free time any more. I’ve got to really want to do something… I’m happy with the balance.’

Athena, a ‘little Taurus’, who will be two in April, ‘is very outdoorsy and like a little spinning top’. She certainly has two doting, laughing aunts, who say they are ‘steering her in our direction’. ‘She’s very similar to the twins,’ says Kitty. ‘It’s so funny…so cool for her when she has these two aunts that come bursting through the door. I don’t think she thinks there’s an age gap.’

Amelia: ‘I don’t think we think there’s an age gap.’

Kitty: ‘So there’s actually a triplet there for them. When the girls are on the phone and she doesn’t want them to go, she pulls out her whole repertoire of tricks.’

Aside from aunt duties, the twins usually work as a pair. Their first cover was also Tatler, in March 2021 – although this issue’s cover, they are thrilled to say, is the first for all three together. The twins have just done a collaboration with Paige jeans, but Amelia says: ‘We’re not exclusive with any particular brands. It’s been an amazing year working with so many different design and jewellery brands. We’re able to travel, which really helps, I think.’ The reality of growing up in South Africa was that the sisters went between there and Althorp with very little adventure elsewhere; now they are based in Europe, they are making the most of it. The twins are thrilled to have been to Sicily, and to have been skiing – ‘We should have started earlier!’

Despite the glitz, there’s nothing spoiled about them. Kitty’s involvement with the charity Centrepoint now dates back 10 years. She credits its visibility somewhat to her aunt Diana, Princess of Wales: ‘She put the name out there’. Pictured, Eliza wears a necklace from DAVID MORRIS, Amelia wears an OSCAR DE LA RENTA gown with De Beers necklace and MOUSSAIEFF HIGH JEWELLERY bracelet. All three have South African partners from welcoming families, and returned to Cape Town for Christmas with their mother and baby brother, who is also at university in the city. Eliza describes how everyone comes home to see their families: it’s one massive school/university reunion with beach thrown in. While Kitty now feels ‘totally English’, Eliza feels South African, because it holds ‘all my happiest and most special memories’, and Amelia can’t decide. All the sisters are close – each other’s ‘safety net’ – and the twins see each other every morning when they go to a local barre class. Though neither parent was remotely sporty, both twins are exercise freaks. They love boxing as well as barre. Amelia’s husband, Greg, is, after all, a lifestyle coach, currently personal training and working on the London launch of the fitness app TruBe. ‘He’s working a lot now. But we surf together, hike together,’ she explains.

Eliza’s partner, Channing, has a 10-year-old son from a previous relationship. ‘It’s so sweet, because I get to play out all my childhood [with the boys]… all the fun activities. I’ve skydived, bungee jumped… Bodyboarding, surfing – I love that,’ she says,

Aside from outdoorsiness, all three credit their upbringing with fostering in them an awareness of the lives of others, South Africa having the highest income disparity in the world. ‘I travelled a little bit with my mum for [the charity] United Purpose, which was amazing,’ says Eliza. ‘It made us very grounded,’ she says. Indeed, despite the glitz posted on Instagram, there is nothing spoiled about any of them in person.

Kitty’s involvement in Centrepoint now dates back 10 years. She credits its visibility somewhat to her aunt Diana, Princess of Wales: ‘I think she put the name out there. Centrepoint has been a cherished charity that my family and I have supported for many years. I’m extremely proud of my cousin Prince William for all he does and continues to do to support Centrepoint and the vital work they provide to homeless young people.’

Kitty is an ambassador for the charity’s independent living programme, which provides low-cost housing, enabling young people to live where they can work and have enough left for other essential expenditures. ‘[It’s] trying to break that vicious cycle and allow people to get on their feet and work their way up the employment ladder,’ she says. ‘The thing I’ve always loved about Centrepoint is just how practical it is. It’s not simply providing a much-needed roof over someone’s head: they’ll train you, they’ll dress you for job interviews. Their goal is to get these people through their system. They’re just an amazing team and the confidence and the sense of identity that they help give to people who have been stripped of it…’

It also helps that they have all been encouraged by their mother to be open about their mental health. This has given a ‘more the merrier’ attitude to all their siblings and half-siblings. For all three, mental health is both an open topic and an interest. Tragedy struck Eliza in her youth when her teenage boyfriend Chris Elliott died in a car crash. She went on to study psychology and says: ‘I’ve seen a therapist for the last 17 years. I think everyone should have someone to speak to that’s outside of their inner circle. It’s a privilege to be able to have someone to help you and support you and guide you.’

If their mother encouraged such openness, did their father give them a love of history? Althorp was built on a sheep fortune – a Spencer was the richest man in England during the reign of James I. Family connects them to Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, to the 1st Duke of Marlborough, to Winston Churchill… let alone Diana. Kitty likes ‘strong women’, particularly now she is a mother to Athena. ‘I want to understand the heritage of both sides of the family’ and also ‘a little bit of fashion [history], too.’ Her husband bought her some handbags that had belonged to her great-aunt and great-grandmother. Lady Anne Spencer, sister of the 8th Earl, was an officer in the Wrens in the Second World War and Kitty has the gold bag that was given to her by the staff of Althorp for her 21st birthday: ‘It says “Anne” on it.’ She also has a beautiful chainmail ‘Roaring Twenties’ handbag that belonged to Anne’s mother – her great-grandmother Cynthia, wife of the 7th Earl, daughter of the Duke of Abercorn, and Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen Mother for 35 years. Michael bought them in secret and gave them to his wife three years ago. ‘I’ll definitely give them to my daughter one day. [They are] so special to pass on. It’s lucky to have our family history so accessible to us, so we can understand where we came from.’

Weddings have played a pivotal part in their public lives, from William and Kate’s to Harry and Meghan’s (Kitty stunned in Dolce and woke up with tens of thousands of new followers on Instagram the next day). Amelia’s was on a mountaintop in the winelands of Stellenbosch overlooking Table Mountain: ‘I’ve been with my partner for almost 16 years, so we had the wedding of my dreams in Cape Town,’ she says. ‘It was just literally the happiest day of my life.’ She wore a sweeping lace Atelier Versace gown designed for her; and her little brother Samuel Aitken walked her down the aisle.

Kitty’s wedding in 2021 was at the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati, with views onto Rome. ‘I always knew that I wanted to get married in Italy. Stefano and Domenico made my dress – Domenico said, “Just choose the people who are very talented at what they do and then let them do it.” A little bit of faith in some creative Italians and you can just relax and enjoy what it’s about.’
It lasted three days, attended by friends including pop star Pixie Lott and the Marchioness of Bath. Kitty wore five Dolce & Gabbana gowns, the centrepiece a high-neck lace dress with exquisite Victoriana-style puff sleeves that recalled her mother’s.

And Eliza? Joyously, it seems that there could be more celebrations on the horizon. She has been with partner Channing for nine years and says another wedding ‘is definitely on the cards’. And if that isn’t an opportunity for another phototastic fashion frenzy, then frankly, what is?
