The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set to arrive on the big screen in 2024, and here’s everything we know about the cast, the plot and how it connects to the overall Lord of the Rings franchise.
We are so ready to go back to the Middle-earth as we wait for Rings of Power season two on Prime Video, so let’s hope there are no more delays for this animated movie.
In August 2023, Warner Bros pushed back the release from April to December 2024. The move was a result of the studio shuffling its release calendar due to the now finished actors’ strike, which affected filming across Hollywood.
It sounds like The War of the Rohirrim will be worth the wait at least because at Annecy Film Festival in June 2023, an exclusive first look was screened and the first reactions are very positive.
This prequel film is set nearly 200 years before The Two Towers and tells the tale of the legendary Helm Hammerhand.
The War of the Rohirrim was announced in June 2021, and it won’t be the end for big-screen Lord of the Rings movies. It was confirmed in February 2023 that Warner Bros is developing new movies, after signing a deal with Middle-earth Enterprises.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves yet. Here’s everything you need to know about The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna, and Janine Duvitski have been cast in undisclosed voice roles too.

Behind the scenes, the movie is being directed by Kenji Kamiyama. Oscar-winner Philippa Boyens, who was part of the original screenwriting team of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, will be executive producing alongside producer Joseph Chou.
Also returning for the project will be The Lord of the Rings alums from its creative team, Oscar winner Richard Taylor and Tolkien illustrator John Howe.
The screenplay will be based on a script by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and will be set around 250 years before the events of the original movie, which is dubbed as the third age, while the new show is set to take place during the second age.

War of the Rohirrim plot: What will Lord of the Rings The War of the Rohirrim be about?
The movie is set to explore the as-yet-untold story of the Helm’s Deep fortress, following the life of the legendary King of Rohan Helm Hammerhand.
Helm and his people are forced to make a brave last stand in the fortress of Hornburg (later known as Helm’s Deep) after ruthless Dunlending Lord Wulf, hellbent on vengeance over his father’s death, launches a surprise attack.
Leading the resistance against Wulf is Helm’s daughter Hera.
War of the Rohirrim trailer: Any footage from Lord of the Rings The War of the Rohirrim yet?
Unfortunately, production is still underway on the movie, so it’ll be a while before we see anything from The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim yet.
The prestigious Annecy Film Festival screened a couple of scenes in June 2023, and the reactions have been quite promising.
“Lord Of The Rings War of the Rohirrim is already shooting to the top of my most anticipated movies of 2024. The (very short and unfinished) footage shown at #Annecy2023 looks fantastic. This is 100% in line with the original trilogy while also very much an anime. Can’t wait,” they wrote at the French site CloneWeb.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is released in cinemas on December 13, 2024, while The Rings of Power is available to watch on Prime Video.
