Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai is currently running at maximum capacity. This suggests that Tesla China would likely be operating at full throttle all the way to the end of 2024.
The Tesla CEO shared his update in a post on social media platform X as a response to a report alleging that Chinese car buyers are shunning Tesla’s electric vehicles as rivals flood the country’s EV market with more advanced models and hybrids gain traction. Musk’s rebuttal was short and quick.
“Believing the news is silly. Our Shanghai factory is running at max capacity,” Musk wrote in his post on X.
Giga Shanghai is Tesla’s primary vehicle export hub. While the facility only produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, it is also Tesla’s largest factory by output today. And while reports emerged earlier this year stating that Model Y production was being cut from March to June, more recent reports from local news outlets have suggested that Giga Shanghai has since bounced back.
Musk’s recent comment on X all but confirmed that Giga Shanghai is back to operating at full capacity. Interestingly enough, the Tesla CEO’s comment comes as Tesla China achieved its highest domestic vehicle sales this year so far in August 2024, with the company selling 63,456 vehicles in the domestic auto market. Estimates also indicate that Tesla China was able to sell 388,000 vehicles in China’s domestic market during the January to August period.
Tesla noted in its Q2 2024 Update Letter that Giga Shanghai has an annual vehicle production capacity of over 950,000 units. Provided that Giga Shanghai runs at full capacity until the end of the year, territories that are supplied by the facility would likely have a healthy supply of Model 3 and Model Y units this year. This would be beneficial for Tesla, especially considering the warm reception received by the reengineered Tesla Model 3 so far.
