Did the Coaches Make the Right Picks? The Voice Blinds Night 2 Had Viewers Divided—Find Out Why!

The Voice’s Season 27 Blind Auditions continued Monday with another 11 contestants singing for their supper (and only nine of them getting served). But did any of them knock you out of your seat? Read on, and we’ll discuss.

Tatum Scott (Team Kelsea), “vampire” — Grade: C+ | Though the two-chair turn started strong in her lower register, she seemed to get weaker as her Olivia Rodrigo cover went on. (Is this what happens when “vampire” fails to draw blood?) Nevertheless, Kelsea Ballerini pulled out all the stops to recruit the contestant likeliest to win a Kelsea Ballerini Lookalike Contest.

Bryson Battle (Team Legend), “A Song for You” — Grade: A | With incredible range and seemingly limitless vocal confidence, this four-chair turn delivered a rendition of the classic ballad that was so stunning, Michael Bublé was moved to exclaim, “You might have the greatest voice I’ve ever heard.” I wouldn’t go that far, but Bryson was exceptional.

Jordan Allen (Team Legend), “Old Time Rock & Roll” — Grade: B+ | I wasn’t altogether crazy about Jordan’s take on Bob Seger; it felt kinda karaoke. However, I was crazy about the gusto with which Jordan sang and impressed by the spin that he could put on any given note. “I turned,” Michael said when the two-chair turn was done, “because I could hear versatility.”

Hayden Grove (Team Adam), “Mack the Knife” — Grade: B | Even with Adam Levine yelling at Kelsea to block Michael, you could hear that Hayden was good. He had swing, swagger and a lovely light touch that sold the number without overselling it. Why on earth didn’t Michael turn his chair? Hayden had used vibrato like a pop singer, a no-no, apparently, when doing the classics.
jaelen johnston the voice
Jaelen Johnston (Team Kelsea), “Where the Wild Things Are” — Grade: B+ | Twenty-one-year-old Jaelen’s Luke Combs cover was as solid as concrete. He’s got a terrific country voice, the kind that makes you think he gargles with asphalt, and a compelling stage presence to boot. Even John Legend, who didn’t turn for Jaelen, remarked on the authenticity in his tone.

Ricardo Moreno (Team Michael), “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” — Grade: B | There was something a little forced about Ricardo’s Blind; nerves likely. Despite that, it was obvious that he has a better-than-average voice, he just may need a little help knowing exactly what to do with it. Especially given the way that he was feeling the song, I was glad Michael used his coach’s replay to save him.

ari camille voice
Ari Camille (Team Legend), “I Wanna Be Down” — Grade: A- | Ari hadn’t even gotten to the chorus of her Brandy cover before the “dope texture of her voice” had inspired John to swivel his chair. You could tell that Ari was a theater major, too, because she didn’t just sing beneath the spotlight, she emoted, adding passion and power to a performance marked by marathon runs.

Braxton Garza (Team Michael), “Pretty Little Poison” — Grade: B+ | Braxton’s twang was so extremely country, I felt like I should be shooting whiskey while listening to his Blind. Beyond that, though, when he opened his vocal up, it turned out that he had good range, too, and the ability to fill big, round notes like so many water balloons.

Britton Moore (Team Adam), “Yellow” — Grade: C | Adam immediately turned around upon hearing Britton’s lilting opening notes. But I’ll be damned if I heard what so dazzled all four coaches. The 21-year-old seems like a sweet, passionate kid, but his Coldplay cover altogether lacked oomph. I love a character voice (see also: Season 26’s Mark Shiiba) but, um, not this one.
