David Corenswet Calls Superman His “Most Challenging Role Yet”—Here’s What He Says About Stepping Into the Iconic Cape!

Superman lead actor David Corenswet touched upon playing the Metropolis Marvel. This comes after Rachel Brosnahan talked about how she prepared to play Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane in the Man of Steel’s newest cinematic outing.

Corenswet brought this subject up in an interview with GQ Italia, avouching, “Playing Superman was the most challenging role of my career for its scope and physical demands. Two sides of the same person, a dichotomy dictated by circumstances, the environment and the secret. I focus on doing my best for the director, the crew and my colleagues who have worked at the top of their abilities for months or years. If I do well for them, I think I’ve done everything possible.”

Prior to this, Corenswet delved into how he prepared for Clark Kent and Superman in December, commenting at the time that Superman writer-director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn “suggested All-Star Superman to read for Clark, specifically, because there are interesting challenges with Clark.” He went on to further note, “It was interesting having a silent version to look at. I hadn’t read so many Superman comics that I had since all the different Clarks that have appeared in the comics. I knew the ones that appeared in television and films, but it was great having a silent one and getting the impression from that. So, I drew a lot from that, specifically, for Clark.

A New Superman Is Introduced

Additionally, Gunn insisted that Corenswet’s Superman performance will “blow people the f— away” in October, further avowing, “He is the movie star that everyone just dreams he could possibly be. And I don’t think anyone really understands the depth of this guy’s talent, dramatically, comedically, he’s the best physical action star I’ve probably ever worked with… He’s an amazing actor, and Rachel Brosnahan, people are going to die for her as well.” Tying into this, the filmmaker touched upon how Christopher Reeve’s Last Son of Krypton influenced his own in 2023, asking how does one “take this outrageous concept of a guy who flies around” and turn him into something real.

Putting the spotlight on Superman, Gunn explained why Superman is the “true start” of the DCU after Creature Commandosconveying that Creature Commandos is “a way for people to just take a little nibble” and see what it tastes like. Gunn also debunked a rumored connection between Superman and Creature Commandos.

Besides these bits of news, Gunn delved into why other DC heroes are in the project, avowing, “They fit the story I’m telling. Story always comes first.” More recently, Gunn touched upon why he’s not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again in November, asserting at the time, “I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them.

Superman arrives in theaters faster than a speeding bullet on July 11, 2025.
