Charli XCX Pleads with Fans to Cease Chanting ‘Taylor Swift Is Dead’ at Her Concerts: ‘I Will Not Tolerate It’

“It disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community,” the ‘Brat’ singer wrote in an Instagram Story following a Brazil show

Charli XCX has a zero-tolerance policy for negativity — especially for anyone hating on Taylor Swift.

On Sunday, June 23, the “360” singer, 31, took a moment to address a portion of her fandom that’s made the “Fortnight” pop star, 34, the target of a hate campaign recently, in which some have criticized her online and even led “Taylor Swift Is Dead” chants at the former’s concerts.

“Can the people who do this please stop. Online or at my shows,” Charli wrote in an Instagram Story, which included a screenshot of an X (formerly Twitter) user’s video that brought the ill-mannered chants to her attention.

“It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community,” she added. “I will not tolerate it.”

The original video that mentioned Charli and the “toxic behavior” exhibited by fans was posted after the singer’s show in São Paulo, Brazil, on June 22. The caption reads, “Hey @charli_xcx, your brazilian fans have been showing toxic behavior by screaming ‘Taylor is dead!’ in your concerts and events related to you. Could you do something about it? We don’t believe that’s what music should be about. @taylornation13 please take notice in that too.”

The chants and posts started after fans mistakenly assumed Charli’s song “Sympathy Is a Knife” is about her insecurity around Swift. Charli previously opened for Swift on her 1989 stadium tour, along with Camila Cabello.

The day after her performance, Charli penned a heartfelt message on Instagram to fans who attended her shows in Brazil and Mexico this past week, writing, “to all the angels i met in cdmx & São Paulo, thank u for being so kind and sweet!!!”

“Your energy at these shows was truly unmatched and i’m sooo happy i got to dj the girl, so confusing version for the first time ever whilst partying with you,” she continued, referencing the remix she dropped on Friday, June 21, with Lorde. “emotional moment fr. seriously – i love u all forever and youre so julia <3.”

Charli’s defense of Swift follows the “girl, so confusing version with lorde” release, on which the “Von Dutch” musician also clears the airs about her complicated friendship with fellow pop star Lorde, 27. The vulnerable remix unpacks the two’s feelings toward one another after fans speculated that the original track — which appears on Charli’s latest album, Brat — was aimed at the “Royals” artist.

“Yeah, I don’t know if you like me / Sometimes I think you might hate me / Sometimes I think I might hate you / Maybe you just wanna be me,” Charli sings on the original and remixed songs. Lorde’s verse then responds with lyrics like, “Well, honestly, I was speechless / When I woke up to your voice note / You told me how you’d been feeling / Let’s work it out on the remix.”

Upon the release of Charli’s Brat — which arrived on June 7 — Lorde celebrated the LP in an Instagram Story, saying, “Charli just cooked this one different.” She added, “So much grit, grace and skin in the game. I speak for all of us when I say it’s an honour to be moved, changed and gagged by her work. There is NO ONE like this bitch.”
