“Break The Internet”: The Boys Creator Gives Big Update On Jared Padalecki Cameo, Addresses Possible Supernatural Reunion

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) shake hands in Supernatural

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke provides an update on Jared Padalecki appearing in the series. With Jensen Ackles playing the role of Soldier Boy in The Boys and in the spinoff series Gen V, there has been a great deal of interest in Padalecki joining the franchise as well to reunite with his Supernatural co-star. Season 5 has been confirmed to be The Boys‘ final season, meaning it is the last opportunity for the Sam and Dean Winchester actors to reunite before the main series’ conclusion.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kripke, the creator of Supernatural, expressed his eagerness to make a reunion happen, and that he is engaged in active and productive conversations with Padalecki for The Boys season 5. Despite this development, he clarifies that nothing has been confirmed yet, including who Padalecki will be playing in the final season of the Prime Video series. Check out Kripke’s comments about the potential reunion below:

The value of that is to break the internet. So we’ll see whether it’s right for the story. But yes, it’s occurred to me that putting those two in a scene together would destroy much of the world, and that’s appealing.

We both have now seen that it looks like our schedules will line up . I don’t have the role for him yet just because we haven’t cooked it up. We’re still really early in the season 5 break, but it does seem like the planets are aligning. Barring any unforeseen disaster, it seems like it’ll happen. Again, I don’t know what the character is, I don’t know if it’s one episode or more, I genuinely know a total of zero about all of that. I’m not being coy. I really don’t know.

Padalecki’s Role Should Follow The Trend Of Other Supernatural Actors Who Joined The Boys

Solider Boy & Dean Couldn’t Be More Different

Alexander Calvert as Rufus in Gen V episode 2

Rob Benedict standing in the street as Chuck from Supernatural.

One of the best parts of seeing so many Supernatural actors join The Boys is that they have not been typecast and are instead playing drastically different characters. While Ackles’ Supernatural character Dean is ultimately a loyal hero, Soldier Boy only presents the facade of a superhero, and is in actuality a bigoted, selfish individual who is the epitome of toxic masculinity. The juxtaposition between Dean and Soldier Boy is part of what helps Ackles steal the show in The Boys season 3 and in Gen V.

Ackles isn’t the only example of this, with The Boys taking two Supernatural actors who played God and casting them as repugnant human beings. The first is Alexander Calvert, who in Gen V plays Rufus, a Godolkin University student who drugs and attempts to sexually assault Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) before she causes his penis to explode. The second is Rob Benedict, Splinter in The Boys season 4, an assistant to the severely problematic Firecracker (Valorie Curry), and who is responsible for a deeply uncomfortable sauna scene in episode 2.

The Boys can continue this trend by having Padalecki play an appalling character in season 5, a far cry from the empathetic and kind Sam in Supernatural. Not every Supernatural actor in The Boys follows this trend, but a reunion between Ackles and Padalecki would further “break the internet” with both of them playing terrible people instead of the likable duo viewers are used to seeing them play in Supernatural. The crass Soldier Boy has already inspired many memes and GIFs, which will only multiply if he shares scenes with Padalecki’s yet-to-be-determined character.
