Speaking to Empire, Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer recalls the moment she realized Alice Wu-Gulliver wouldn’t make it out alive of the Witches’ Road. Although Schaeffer regretted killing off Alice, she understood that the witch was the best candidate for a tragic sacrifice in Agatha All Along episode 5. as Alice’s abrupt death embodies the Witches’ Road’s ruthless nature. Read Schaeffer’s comments below:
“It is really sad, and it feels unfair. I know that’s been the reaction of viewers, and I understand that, and sort of feel it myself. But it’s a show about death. It was an imperative to take that seriously, and feel both the beauty and sadness of it. We deliberated cutting that scene. I felt it was important to see Rio take someone. And I wanted Alice to articulate what the audience is feeling – This isn’t fair. But she did die a hero.”
What Jac Schaeffer’s Agatha All Along Death Comments Mean
Alice Wu-Gulliver’s death in Agatha All Along episode 5 may have been one of the most shocking in the Disney+ show, as Alice had just learned to embrace her power, made peace with her past, and eradicated a family curse — all at once. Alice also tried to control Agatha Harkness’ magic instinctively, realizing that her own power had come back. Unfortunately, Alice couldn’t enjoy the fruits of her completed character arc, and Agatha absorbed all of her power.
Agatha All Along is a series all about death, from Billy Maximoff’s death and rebirth to Scarlet Witch’s looming presence to Agatha Harkness’ own demise at the end of the series. The Witches’ Road is an inherently deadly dimension that teaches every one of its challengers at least one lesson they have refused to acknowledge, but this prize comes with a price. Rio Vidal’s presence all throughout this journey epitomized this implication. In the end, only Billy Maximoff — who had already died once — was able to exit the Witches’ Road in one piece.
