Because the official inclusion of the super-pet but it might also foreshadow a heart-wrenching storyline connected to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Production on the DC Universe’s Superman reboot, directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, is progressing steadily for its anticipated 2025 release. Gunn, known for his active engagement with fans, recently offered a glimpse into the highly anticipated project. On social media, he shared an official poster featuring Corenswet’s Superman in a reflective moment, sitting in space and gazing at Earth. Beside him, in a striking nod to DC comics, is Krypto—Superdog himself.

Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, there isn’t a great deal known about the plot, but considering it appears to be based on the comic run by the same name, it’s expected that this film aims to spotlight a more complex and gritty take on Superman’s cousin.

While she’s not traveling with Superman, or any other Justice League members in Woman of Tomorrow, Kara is not entirely alone. The comic features the pooch heavily in the first issue of the comic book run and while James Gunn is known for simply loving dogs and that might be why he included Krypto it seems more than likely that the pupper is included in Superman so he can also be included in Supergirl. Though there’s a real question if Gunn would allow what happens to the superdog in Woman of Tomorrow to go down, considering the emotional ties he’s admitted to having to the character.

How Close Will The Movie Tie To The Comics?

An important detail of the comic run is that Supergirl is on a world with a red sun so she isn’t fully powered up. This allows the mission for Ruthye to gain revenge for her father to take longer than one issue as Krem escapes the superhero. The red sun also affects Krypto and when Krem shoots a poisoned tipped arrow at Supergirl, Krypto gets hit instead. An emotional panel shows that the arrow strikes home and doesn’t just bounce off, in case readers thought the lovable dog isn’t hurt.

The apparent death of Krypto, especially early in the movie would certainly be a heartbreaking and emotional turn for just the second movie in the DCU. Especially after fans will no doubt fall in love with the character in Superman, based on what they’ve seen of him so far in the trailer.

There is some hope this particularly heart wrenching development won’t come to pass. Gunn has already tipped his hand that there will be changes to the story. The DCU’s version of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will include the anti-hero Lobo. And while Lobo was meant to be in the original comic run he didn’t actually appear in the books. If the movie is introducing a brand new character, it’s not hard to believe that the beginning of the movie will be different enough that not only won’t Krypto be hit by a poisoned arrow, but he won’t be in the movie at all.

On the other hand, considering that one twist of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics is that Krypto was never really killed, it’s certainly possible that Gunn could pull the rug out from under fans in a similar way.
