The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln is back—but this time, he’s trading the zombie apocalypse for a wild new role as a dangerously unpredictable family man!

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Lives' Rick

The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln is returning to the small screen as the star of a TV series. The casting also marks his return to British television.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lincoln will star in the upcoming ITV series Cold Water, a six-part thriller. A first look at Lincoln in his role as a “repressed and depressed family man” can be seen below. Other actors who will co-star alongside Lincoln in Cold Water include Ewen Bremner (TrainspottingOur Flag Means Death), Eve Myles (HijackThe Crow Girl), and Indira Varma (Game of ThronesCreature Commandos).

In the series, Lincoln plays John, a father and husband who “ups and moves his family to the rural idyll of Coldwater, far away from London. Upon arrival, John is quickly befriended by his charming, confident next-door neighbor Tommy (Bremner), a devoted husband to the local vicar Rebecca (Myles). John’s wife Fiona (Varma) despises Tommy.”

The reported synopsis adds, “When her husband’s relationship with their enigmatic new neighbor becomes increasingly intense, Fiona’s suspicions are aroused. She is unconvinced Tommy is all he seems to be. When John’s long-repressed rage comes to a head with disastrous results, he soon finds himself unexpectedly indebted to his new friend, unaware that Tommy himself is harboring horrifying secrets.”

The series is created by writer David Ireland (The LoversUlster AmericanCyprus Avenue). Ireland will also serve as an executive producer, while the seris is produced by Sister (Black DovesEricChernobyl). The first half of the season is directed by Lee Haven Jones (A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis StoryDoctor Who), while the second half is helmed by Andrew Cumming (ShetlandCold Feet).

Andrew Lincoln Returns to British TV

Lincoln is perhaps best known for playing Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead, the hit zombie drama that rose on AMC as one of television history’s most popular shows. While Lincoln left the series as a main star in its ninth season, he recently returned for the limited series spinoff, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Danai Gurira co-starred as Michonne, Rick’s partner. After leaving the original show, Lincoln starred in the movie Penguin Bloom and had a role in the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

“The next thing that I’m about to do is the polar opposite of Rick Grimes,” Lincoln said of his role in Cold Water in a previous Radio Times interview. “It will be a palate cleanser, shall we say… I’m now returning to a British role and my own accent. My daughter has been doing her GCSEs, so we’re staying here and I’m about to go up to Glasgow to start work on a new ITV drama, Cold Water, with playwright David Ireland.”

Cold Water doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
