Logan Allen reveals what will definitely happen to Kyle in ‘Sweet Magnolias’ season 5

Kyle is ‘discovering who he is’ in ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 4, Logan Allen says.

The Sweet Magnolias kids are growing up.

When we first met Maddie Townsend’s middle child, Kyle, he was an awkward freshman struggling to find his place in the world. Four seasons later, he’s a more mature, confident person, actor Logan Allen says.

Kyle is in a very different place than he was in season 1, Allen told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in an interview ahead of season 4, which drops Feb. 6 on Netflix.

“In season 4, there’s a huge, huge step forward with this character. He’s not just a freshman in high school anymore,” Allen says. “He’s discovering who he is, finding himself. And on top of that, he’s transitioning into a young adult … I think this season shows Kyle not only finding himself, but also trying to navigate those new responsibilities.”

It’s a shift Allen can relate to, having been through it himself.

“I’m turning 21 this year, and when I started I was 14, turning 15 in season 1,” he says. “And so I’ve gone through that change. And now seeing Kyle kind of go right behind me and go through the same things I went through and these same life lessons that I went through, it’s so much fun and also easy for me to dive into because I literally just experienced this a couple years back.”

‘Serenity is never serene,’ Logan Allen says

Kyle’s already seen some major upheaval in his life, from the end of his parents’ marriage to season 1’s cliffhanger car accident. Expect more storms ahead in season 4 as he and his family navigate fresh — and unexpected — challenges and opportunities. Take his evolving relationship with his mother’s boyfriend Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening). This season, Cal steps up as a father figure to Kyle in a way he hasn’t before, and Kyle is surprisingly OK with that.

“He’s more open to it now than ever,” said Allen, who points to actors like Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale as role models for his career. “And you really see their relationship flourish, which is something we haven’t really seen in past seasons.”

Kyle’s dynamic with his mom (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) is also “more layered than ever,” Allen teased. And of course, his relationships with his older brother Ty (Carson Rowland) and girlfriend Lily (Artemis) are tested in surprising ways in season 4.

“Serenity is never serene,” Allen said. “There’s always something going on.”

The storylines on Sweet Magnolias might be dramatic, but it’s the feeling of connection and community that keeps people coming back to the show, Allen said.

“I think what makes this show super successful is the fact that people can relate to any character,” he said. “There are so many characters in the show and from so many different backgrounds, and you can at least relate to what one character is going through … It’s legitimate problems that we all go through in one way or another.”

Sweet Magnolias Season 4 premieres Feb. 6 on Netflix.
