Deadpool & Wolverine Can Finally Redeem The Juggernaut Joke Nobody Understood For 20 Years

Vinnie Jones' Juggernaut in X-Men The Last Stand with Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine

The Juggernaut appears to be one of the many characters returning in Deadpool & Wolverine, so Marvel Studios can finally give the X-Men villain redemption after 18 years. Since Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were confirmed to be making their MCU debuts in Deadpool & Wolverine, there has been speculation that many other Fox X-Men Universe characters could join them. Deadpool & Wolverine will act as a final farewell to many beloved heroes and villains from Fox’s previous franchise, so it’s the best place for some of Fox’s most divisive moments to be fixed.

The official trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine unveiled several returning characters from Fox’s X-Men franchise, including the likes of Toad, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, and Azazel. There are hopes that more high-profile stars, such as James Marsden’s Cyclops, Halle Berry’s Storm, and Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, could also appear, though most of Deadpool & Wolverine’s cameos have been kept tightly under wraps. Another surprising addition to the roster may have just been uncovered, however, which could see Deadpool & Wolverine finally explaining one controversial quote from 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand.

Deadpool & Wolverine Is Hiding Juggernaut’s Return

In June 2024, Total Film released a series of official stills from Deadpool & Wolverine, ahead of the movie’s much anticipated release on July 26. These images provided a new look at Jackman’s Wolverine, Reynolds’ Deadpool, and Dogpool, as well as several other characters. One of these may be, surprisingly, the Juggernaut, the unstoppable mutant who was originally portrayed by Vinnie Jones in X-Men: The Last StandThe Juggernaut’s helmet can be seen directly behind Wolverine’s head, though the clawed X-Men member is blocking the villain’s body from view.

Vinnie Jones’ Juggernaut has also been seen in the background of one shot in Deadpool & Wolverine’s Best Friends Day teaser trailer (via YouTube). Interestingly, during a March 2024 interview with Yahoo UK, actor Jones revealed that, despite being asked to return and expressing admiration for the Deadpool movies, he refused, claiming it was “such a drama” to put on the bulky supervillain suit. Nevertheless, the suspected appearances of the Juggernaut in Deadpool & Wolverine’s marketing may imply Jones changed his mind, which creates the perfect opportunity for his character to be redeemed in the MCU.

Juggernaut’s Return Can Fix The Most Controversial X-Men Line Ever

Juggernaut delivering his iconic line in X-Men The Last Stand

Vinnie Jones’ role as the Juggernaut in X-Men: The Last Stand was significantly trimmed down after Brett Ratner replaced original director Matthew Vaughn, but the character’s most controversial line was still kept in the final cut. During his spar with Elliot Page’s Kitty Pryde, Jones’ villain exclaims, “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch,” which simply came across as nothing more than a badly written line. However, this line was actually a reference to a redubbed scene from 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series, which became a viral meme, suggesting the line was actually supposed to be played for laughs.

While this quote didn’t have the desired effect, the Juggernaut’s potential return in Deadpool & Wolverine creates the best chance for this 18-year-old line to be amended. Vinnie Jones’ return could see him repeat this catchphrase, hopefully to greater success. Wade Wilson’s pending response to this line, and the fact that almost two decades have passed, means this quote may now work to its full impact in the MCU’s Phase 5. Jones has previously opened up about his disappointment with X-Men: The Last Stand, so Deadpool & Wolverine could deliver some much-needed redemption.
