Le joueur NBA français des San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama

While Victor Wembanyama’s rookie season is off to a pretty bad start from a collective point of view, we imagine that the Spurs will be keen to strengthen the roster next summer. A big draft pick should arrive, but be careful not to forget the free agent market.

Currently on 15 defeats in a row, the Spurs are having a difficult campaign in the West, even if we understand that winning is not a priority.

Gregg Popovich innovated with Jeremy Sochan at the point guard position, while he decided to place Devin Vassell in this position in the last game. San Antonio is obviously hoping to get a new big draft choice for next May, with why not another first pick.

An ideal recruit for Spurs?

Very unlikely luck-wise, but you never know with Spurs. We should also not forget the fact that the franchise will have money to spend on the market.

San Antonio has what it takes to make great offers, while Victor Wembanyama could attract some good people despite his rookie status. One name is already coming up insistently.

Jonas Valanciunas is a free agent next offseason. He should easily be an option and Spurs should be interested in partnering him with Wemby.

Today at the Pelicans, Valanciunas is averaging 14.2 points and 9.1 rebounds on the Louisiana side. A well-respected player in the league who will have no trouble finding a new team if necessary next year. But is he really the best fit with Wemby? This remains to be determined.

Although the talent of number 17 is not in question, let us remember that Wembanyama is doing great things at the pivot position this season. To the point where many observers believe that the Frenchman should gradually slide into this role of 5 in the long term.

Another data to take into account: Zach Collins. He is the current center for the Spurs and signed a 2-year extension for 35 million in Texas. The franchise therefore trusts him to be the perfect partner with Victor.

And what do we do with Zach Collins? It will reach 35 million over the next two years. If he doesn’t play well, it will be a difficult contract to move.

Jonas Valanciunas wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Spurs, but the presence of Zach Collins complicates things.

Not to mention Victor Wembanyama is having fun playing center so far. It’s up to the front office to choose next summer.
